Knowledge Hives has been risen in the research community where contributing to the open source was a very common practice. We understand that in order to support the coming of third generation of the Internet (Web 3.0) a host of open source software needs to become widely accessible. Apart from our contribution to open source solutions delivered by others, a part of the mission of Knowledge Hives is to continue the research and development efforts of the Corrib.org group that has delivered many open source projects based on the research on the Web 3.0. In addition to publishing our own open source solutions and contributing to the existing open source projects, especially from the Corrib.org group, we provide commercial support that allows to leverage the potential of the open source software in more demanding environments, e.g., enterprises or large organizations.

What is Linked Data and the Semantic Web and what is all the hype about? Principally, the Semantic Web is a Web 3.0 web technology - a way of linking data between systems or entities that allows for rich, self-describing interrelations of data available across the globe on the web.

The LDSpider project provides a web crawling framework for the Linked Data web. Requirements and challenges for crawling the Linked Data web are different from regular web crawling, thus the LDSpider project offers a web crawler adapted to traverse and harvest content from the Linked Data web.

Linked Data is a method to publish data on the Web and to interlink data between different data sources. Linked Data can be accessed using Semantic Web browsers, just as traditional Web documents are accessed using HTML browsers. However, instead of following document links between HTML pages, Semantic Web browsers enable surfers to navigate between different data sources by following RDF links. RDF links can also be followed by robots or Semantic Web search engines in order to crawl the Semantic Web. Enabling users (from individuals to large organizations) to put video in the Web requires that we build a solid architectural foundation that enables people to create, navigate, search, link and distribute video, effectively making video part of the Web instead of an extension that doesn't take full advantage of the Web architecture.
