Diaspora is the social network that puts you in control of your information. You decide what you'd like to share, and with whom. Your coworkers can't find out that they're seeing the expurgated version. Future employers can't either. You can post updates to everyone, to just your close friends, to just your family, or to any other subset of your friends. It's easy to make these groups, called "aspects," and it's straightforward to share different things with different aspects. Diaspora doesn't expose your information to advertisers, or to games you play, or to other websites you visit. It's inherently private - you tell Diaspora who gets to see those pictures of your kids, and only those people will see them. Period. Choose a home, make an account, and invite your friends to join you! Take back your network.

Many of the participants in the UW-Stout E-Learning and Online Teaching Graduate Certificate Program use Google Sites to create their e-portfolios.  The portfolios are created and used throughout the program. During the practicum, when students become teachers by teaching in one of our graduate classes, they also refine and polish their portfolios. Ultimately the online portfolio becomes a job search tool that helps our graduates show a potential employer what they know. 

In late 2009 and early 2010 I worked on a very interesting cloud computing project. In the process I accrued a fairly comprehensive link list on the topic, which I already briefly mentioned here. The list was also published on the blog of my back then employer, but since the company doesn't exist anymore and their site is offline, I figured I might as well put it up here. Social media Web sites offer more than just a way to seek out friends or old classmates. More businesses are using Facebook and Twitter to gather information on potential employees or to attract customers.
