Free Rice - fight hunger in the world - 1 views

  •
This is a very good activity to improve vocabulary. What is more interesting and even important about this site is that while you play, you can earn grains of rice for each correct answer that will be donated for charity, to help stop hunger in the world. You can also play with grammar here (free rice grammar). There are 60 levels for vocabulary and 5 levels for grammar. They increase by difficulty as you proceed. While trying this with my students, what was so exciting for them was that they learned by answerng correctly they are particpating in a humanitarian act and this greatly motivated them to answer the tests and learn new vocabulary. Though we did just the first 2 levels, the next session almost all of them said that they kept playing it to collect more rice and for this they had learned a large number of new vocabulary. They also said they are gonna play it again when finished both to collect more rice for hunger as well as review what they had learned.
  •
interesting and motivating activity. Just like your Ss I had the feeling that I'm helping hungry people. I wish I could!

This game can be played on line or again with the use of handouts. In case if you don't want to use it online, then the best option is to prepare cards with the word and the articles below, as in the online version. And have the students answer every time you show one card. You can choose one students to answer or make it a competition on "first answered gets a star" This can be engaging and motivating.

This is an online game you can use if you use technologies in the class. Otherwise, you might print them out and provide handouts to your students. This game can be played in pairs or individually. Or you may want to divide your students into two groups. Provide with two boards or flipcharts and have two groups work separately within a certain time limitation to complete the assignment. The group that finishes first wins and gets a price, star, etc.

English grammar for ESL kids: am, are, is (1) - 2 views

  •
Mini grammar lessons for kids learning English: am, are, is - positive form. I tried this activity with one of my students during a private class. After many times of explanations of "to be" verb, I tried this game with him and found it very helpful. This game both teaches and gives practice for the target structure. I taught positive, negative and interrogative forms of verb "to be" with this game, and my student liked it, even playing it at home.
