Project-Based Learning: Success Start to Finish - 7 views

    This is a link to a video of a high school that uses only Project-Based learning PBL, a teaching/learning style where students create projects to demonstrate their learning of the objectives set out by the teacher. It goes through the process of how to set up PBL projects as teachers. It's a decent introduction to the process: something to pique one's interest. At the end there are links to other videos with more information about PBL.

    I really enjoyed this PBL video. The teachers in the video explained the process, allowed the students to do the research on the topics and decide what the best form of their final presentation would be for each group. The students appeared to be actively engaged during their class time. I was impressed by their dress for the final presentations. The principal mentioned that they do speeches 60-65 times each year so by their graduation the students are very versed in public speaking; most impressive. I would like to see our school do more PBL.

    Project-based learning has come to the forefront of education as it is being used to assess what the students know and how they can use the knowledge in the "real world" to problem solve. The approach by the school to implement PBL into their curriculum goes directly back to state standards. I thought the video was well informed and I was impressed with the 60-65 times the students speak in front of others (public speaking).

    Information and communication technology plays a large role in changing the field of education. With laptops, PDAs and even smart phones finding their way into daily lessons, these devices are changing the way teachers and students share information and the way schools communicate both within their own organization and to the community.

    This article and a few others on the site explain the role of Information and Communication Technology in education. This ICT concept is important to me as a Business teacher who is responsible for teaching the tpes of applications that are ICT. To think that the concept of communication technology being added to information technology due to the Internet back in 1997 is interesting.

    I will give Zoho a look. We use google docs at my school now. Each staff member and student was given an account with the same extension. With so many sites to choose from it takes time to see which ones you lke. Google docs seems to show up in many articles.

    Zoho Writer looks interesting as you need to be invited to participate. Google Docs are used extensively within our school, though I only used them for our NGY Ning project last year. We also use Google Docs for attendance in our after school programs.

    The author of this article compares reading on eReaders to a nostalgic paper novel. I share many of her sentiments, but she is optimistic about how reading textbooks on an eReader totally changes how students read for information. Joann Vidall-Cox explains that reading on an eReader allows you to jump to other sources for supplements and explanations for what you are reading. In a way, readers are no longer help hostage by the bookcovers because the eReader allows you to transition to new pages of information. Maybe novels will soon be written with hyperlinks as well!

    Nice explanation of the difference between paper and eReaders. I like the hestitation of the author, and the clarification she uses as to the difference with notations in a certain location. It's great if you like a screen in your face prior to night time reading. It is interesting how students gravitate to the new and then often revert to the old, tried and true formats.

    An interesting article since the Flipped Learning pioneers are trying to clarify all of the information that is out in the public about the flipped classroom. They will hopefully make a profit on the book they have written, which can be used for their non-profit "Flipped Learning Network" which will allow teachers to do Vodcasting and have a Ning site as well. It was very informative.

    This site was great. Our students compete in a few contests, but there is no comparison to what is out there for them to explore.

    What I liked about the site and the TSA overall is that it is STEM related. Not specific to content area but general to all technology courses. Had many types of technical competitions. A change from FBLA or Robotics competitions which are specific.

    One of my student did his senior project presentation using Prezi and it was wonderful. He liked the tool so much he discussed it with his classmates. It was appropriate that his topic was "The Rapid Advancement of Technology: Is it Good or Bad?" His arguments were enlightening coming from an 18 year old heading off to college.

    I have had a couple of students use Prezi for their presentations. They came out great. To me, their presenatations had a much better flow and were more visually pleasing than PowerPoint.

Clever, Cool and Creative...Nice to Meet You Articulate Storyline - 3 views

    The author of the article reviews a new training software release "Articulate Storyline". The program combines several elements: video, dialog balloons, and questions with multiple scenario resolutions for starters. Each scene is very short. The video action stops, and text balloons appear showing the dialog of the scene. Then three possible resolutioins to the scene appear. The user chooses one, and the video continues. It works like an improv play where the audience chooses how each scene will end. Although it's designed as a tool for the teacher, I can see where students would love this, too. The reviewer is definitely not unbiased, but there are links to samples that showcase just what the program can do.

It predicts a greater use of tablets in the short run, game-based learning for the medium term, and augmented reality in the long run. It says all of the technologies will enhance collaborative learning, but associates creativity with only game based learning. Finally, it lists recent trends in technology and education. It also lists the most likely obstacles to adopting the technologies in the classroom. Being a subscription site, one must sign up (free) in order to read past the first page.

    Our school was part of the NetGeneration of Youth program and we had a cultural exchange with two sister schools, one in LA and the other in Uganda. The students communicated over Ning and Skype and they collaborated during two celebrations "parties with a purpose" which allowed for a sharing of menus, music, and stories. The culminating project was a student/teacher exchange for three weeks in each country.
