5 Reasons Why Activity Streams Will Save You From Information Overload - 2 views

  •
Interesting post flagging the info overload things that we have all come across. The second point in the 5 point list is part of the concept that Downes & Siemens have used in the Connectivism MOOC i.e. don't even attempt to read everything - that's not what it's about. Instead choose & filter your information, create networks and trust platforms for 3rd party filtering.

When Getting Rid of College Lectures Makes Sense - Slashdot - 1 views

  •
"NPR reports that Harvard physicist and professor Eric Mazur has largely gotten rid of the lecture in his classes, after finding that in lecture-based classes, students tend to commit to memory formulae and heuristics, but fail to develop deep understanding of concepts. Mazur has tried - and seemingly succeeded - to cultivate deeper learning with a combination of small group peer-instruction and a tight feedback loop based on in-class polling about particular problems."

"Key Takeaways Education built around digital portfolios not only ties together various student-generated artifacts into a coherent whole but also creates an environment in which technology use has a clearly identified purpose. Hundreds of services provide free hosting and website creation tools and are ideal platforms for digital portfolios because they can support just about any type of digital content. Turning consumers of knowledge into producers of knowledge transforms learning into an active experience."

"The $139 Kindle is a game changer. 2011 will be the year that the traditional paper coursepack (finally) disappears, to be replaced by a default digital version with the option to print on demand. And if things go right, the Kindle should be the dominant coursepack delivery platform."
