Hijacking.pdf (application/pdf Object) - 0 views

  •
Article by R Tolley on ePortfolios. There is much here that I disagree with, inasmuch that Tolley seems to be making claims that are now out of date. The fact that many people at a conference came from HE doesn't mean that HE is hijacking anything. There should be a disclaimer note attached to the text too since Tolley is a reseller for an ePortfolio system. That said, the article is worth having in the collection.

Christopher D. Sessums :: Blog :: Using Social Software to Support Teacher Professional... - 0 views

  • My goal was to examine the ways in which an online learning community, as an organizational structure, facilitates participants ability to (1) deepen their understanding of the action research process; (2) deepen their understanding of coaching action research; and (3) deepen their understanding of their own evolving stance toward their professional practice.

Index of Learning Theories and Models - 4 views

  •
"This knowledge base features learning theories that address how people learn. A resource useful for scholars of various fields such as educational psychology, instructional design, and human-computer interaction. Below is the index of learning theories, grouped in somewhat arbitrary categories. Note that this website is an iterative project and these entries are a work in progress; please leave comments with suggestions, corrections, and additional references."

Why the current professional development model is broken - 1 views

  • Professional development departments in most universities and colleges are staffed by faculty (who themselves may have had no formal training in teaching) who are nevertheless outstanding classroom teachers. While they may provide inspiration for classroom teachers, they are often at best indifferent and at worst hostile to online learning. Indeed professional development units are often separately organized from learning technology support units, and it is the latter who are often called upon to provide professional development workshops for online learning, but with a heavy focus on using technology to support classroom teaching rather than on the re-design of teaching to develop the potential of new technologies.

New Media Literacies - 0 views

  •
"Our Space is a set of curricular materials designed to encourage high school students to reflect on the ethical dimensions of their participation in new media environments. Through role-playing activities and reflective exercises, students are asked to consider the ethical responsibilities of other people, and whether and how they behave ethically themselves online. These issues are raised in relation to five core themes that are highly relevant online: identity, privacy, authorship and ownership, credibility, and participation. For more information, download the Introduction to Our Space [pdf], FAQ [pdf], and Road Map [pdf]. All curricular units and lessons are free and available for download below. The full casebook [pdf - 133MB] can be downloaded using the link at the bottom of the page." Critiqued by @downes for not addressing the issue properly "This is "a set of curricular materials designed to encourage high school students to reflect on the ethical dimensions of their participation in new media environments." The content divides into five major subject areas: participation, identity, privacy, credibility, and authorship and ownership. I'm not sure these are the top five things I would list when thinking of ethical dimensions of new media environments. While it's useful that there is a section on flamers, lurkers and mentors I think there should be something about hate, racism and bulling. And while a section on credibility is a good idea, it should be based on the principles of reason and inference, not outrageously bad definitions like this: "Networking-the ability to search for, synthesize, and disseminate information." And this: "Collective intelligence-evidence that participants in knowledge communities pool knowledge and compare notes with others toward a common goal." Wow, those are just wrong. Maybe I need to review this and criticize it more closely."

Google Hangouts: Now with Google Docs Integration, Now Even Better for Edu | Hack Educa... - 3 views

"But here are the best new educational features, in my opinion: Google Hangouts now offer screen-sharing, a sketchpad, and integration with Google Docs. That means that as you collaborate with others, you can view each other's desktops, you can view and edit documents together, you can scribble and share notes."

MobileEducator iPhone Application and CMS Review | .eduGuru - 1 views

  •
A development framework for building iPhone (or mobile?) apps for education. This is a review which notes it is a low barrier to entry, is simple (this is a plus and minus point) and mentions adding RSS, lectures, images, links, event lists and YouTube to your schools app.
  •
Seems like this is a paid for app rather than something we build ourselves. They build and then we can use their CMS to add / change content. Aimed at marketing so maybe we should pass it to them.

The Fallacy of Digital Natives | trainingwreck - 2 views

  •
I get tired of articles that say the native immigrant idea is complete nonsense because we didn't wake up one day and discover a new set of people. Pontefract keeps noting that there are differences across ages but no sharp divides. Well? Was technology created on the 8th day and we have BT and AT??
