ChartTool - create nice looking charts with Image Charts! - 0 views

  •
This neat tool from Google, ChartTool is a simple-to-use chart-making service that lets you simply paste in your data and play around with how it looks. It's never been easier to whip up charts that are actually easy to use and update. In fact, embedding these charts on web pages is quite simple thanks to the embed API. You can even make QR codes in just a few seconds and quickly get an embed code to add it to your website. While ChartTool does not create as many of those fancy 3-D charts that Excel does (it still makes quite a few), it likely will be able to in the future. However, if you're in a rush and need to whip up some exact charts without all the fluff, this is the tool for you.

Succession planning made simple | IT Leadership | TechRepublic.com - 0 views

  • succession planning starts with a conceptually simple question that every leader should be asking: if I disappeared tomorrow, who would take my place?
  •
Asking "who would take my place" gives you all the information you need to start the more detailed aspects of succession planning, and is a question you should ask at least quarterly of your key personnel to ensure that you will not be left in a dangerous position should one of them suddenly depart due to injury, scandal, buses driven by aliens, or anything in between.

If you're a teacher, you would be well served by spending 3 minutes to read through this must-have guide. (We timed it out and it's a bit under 3 minutes. It's almost summertime, you can spare it for us!)"

'Dating' Site Imports 250,000 Facebook Profiles, Without Permission | Epicent... - 0 views

  • “Facebook, an endlessly cool place for so many people, becomes at the same time a goldmine for identity theft and dating — unfortunately, without the user’s control. But that’s the very nature of Facebook and social media in general. If we start to play with the concepts of identity theft and dating, we should be able to unveil how fragile a virtual identity given to a proprietary platform can be.”
  • Mark Zuckerberg, the company’s founder, made his name at Harvard in 2003 by scraping the names and photos of fellow classmates off school servers to feed a system called FaceMash. With the photos, Zuckerberg created a controversial system that pitted one co-ed against another, by allowing others to vote on which one was better looking.
  •
"How does a unknown dating site, with the absurd intention of destroying Facebook, launch with 250,000 member profiles on the first day? Simple. .. an approach taken by two provocateurs who launched LovelyFaces.com this week, with profiles - names, locations and photos - scraped from publicly accessible Facebook pages."
  •
Is scraping data off Facebook art or does this raise privacy issues? Interesting.

BBC News - School ICT to be replaced by computer science programme - 1 views

  • "Instead of children bored out of their minds being taught how to use Word or Excel by bored teachers, we could have 11-year-olds able to write simple 2D computer animations," he said.
  • "Children are being forced to learn how to use applications, rather than to make them. They are becoming slaves to the user interface and are totally bored by it,"
  •
The current programme of information and communications technology (ICT) study in England's schools will be scrapped from September, the education secretary has announced. It will be replaced by an "open source" curriculum in computer science and programming designed with the help of universities and industry.
