Moodle Blog » Import files from Dropbox into Moodle 2.0 - 0 views

  •
"I've only recently started using Dropbox but I am a big fan. It's really convenient to store and access your files from different computers in different locations. In Moodle 2.0 it is possible to import files you have in Dropox by choosing the Dropbox repository when you go to the new file picker. This video shows you how to set it up as admin. All you need is a Dropbox account and a Moodle 2.0 :)"

Interesting tutorial that explains how to integrate DropBox with Moodle 2.0

Offshore cloud privacy may be "impossible," says commissioner | Delimiter - 1 views

  • cloud computing was being used “increasingly” by Victorian agencies, in order to reduce capital and operational costs.
  • Given that many cloud computing service providers are in jurisdictions which do not have similar privacy or data protection laws, if a security breach occurs, an individual in Victoria will be powerless to take action against the cloud service provider and will only be able to complain to the Victorian government organisation
  • large organisations need to look in a more granular fashion at what sort of data they are interested in storing in the cloud — arguing that some data could be harmlessly stored offshore — compared with sensitive data
  •
"Victoria's privacy commissioner has issued a stark warning to government agencies about the use of cloud computing, warning that it may be "impossible" to protect personal information held about Australians when it was located offshore - or even just outside Victoria."

Exposed: hacking threat to our vital buildings - 0 views

  •
"You're in intensive care at a hospital when the lights go out and the heating turns up. Meanwhile, doctors trying to get you to an operating theatre have been trapped in elevators for almost an hour as hackers take control. Experts are warning that this fictitious scenario is all too plausible after two researchers discovered in Australia 653 computer-based building management systems attached to the public internet."

Making Progress - 0 views

  •
It is commonly recognized that our nation's progress depends on improving learning, thereby creating healthier communities and a stronger workforce. In today's world, that requires us to take advantage of new learning tools to ensure that our children's learning is practical and prepares them for the challenges of the 21st century. The advantages of digital media now greatly outweigh the disadvantages and require that schools update their thinking and policies to provide guidance on the use of these tools to improve student learning and achievement.

Victorian Teacher Notebook Scandal - 0 views

  • As you can imagine, conspiracy theories abound. The department lost its previous Mac loving secretary with the change of government, and many worry that the department techs, who have always tried to pretend Macs just don’t exist, are now having their way and trying to push them out of the system altogether.
  •
But after a change to a conservative government that has a very poor track record when it comes to supporting public education, Victorian teachers are slowly awakening to a very different landscape. Perhaps the most rude awakening has occurred by way of the latest notebook lease offer from DEECD.

SuperDuper is the wildly acclaimed program that makes recovery painless, because it makes creating a fully bootable backup painless. Its incredibly clear, friendly interface is understandable, easy to use, and SuperDuper's built-in scheduler makes it trivial to back up automatically. It's the perfect complement to Time Machine under Leopard, Snow Leopard, and Lion, allowing you to store a bootable backup alongside your Time Machine volume-and it runs beautifully on both Intel and Power PC Macs!

Making Online Quizzes with Google Docs - Creating Quizzes | Training & E-Learning Zone ... - 0 views

"Google Docs is a favorite thing for many educators. It is a totally free, web-based word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, and form application. It allows users to create and edit documents online while collaborating in real-time with other users, especially for trainers using it in online classroom. In addition to being a stellar way to write, store and manage your documents and slideshows, is also a fantastically useful way to create online quizzes for assessment. "

QR Codes: Are You Ready For Paper-Based Hyperlinks? - 0 views

  •
"You've probably seen them in newspapers, magazines or other paper-based publications: two-dimensional bar codes, called quick response codes (QR codes). What are they? They have been described as paper-based hyperlinks, and this is a good description. You simply take a picture of a QR code with your smart phone, and you get redirected to a website using your cell phone's browser. They can also be used digitally-you can append a QR code to a Tweet, or they can be displayed on a web page to transfer contact information directly to a cell phone, for example. This technology is blurring the distinction between smart phones, digital destination and content, and paper-based communication mediums."

TalkMiner - 0 views

  •
Lecture webcasts are readily available on the Internet. These include class lectures, research seminars and product demonstrations. Webcasts routinely combine presentation slides with either a synchronized audio stream (i.e., podcast) or an audio/video stream. Conventional web search engines retrieve this content if you include "webcast" or "lecture" among your search terms, or search a website that specifically organizes lecture content. But users, particularly students, want to find the place in a lecture when an instructor covers a specific topic. Answering these queries requires a search engine that can search within the webcast to identify important keywords. TalkMiner aggregates and indexes lecture videos available across the internet. The system processes RSS feeds from a variety of sites to collect lecture videos. The system automatically processes the video to generate metadata describing each talk including the video frames that contain slides, their time offsets, and the text recovered from those frames by optical character recognition. TalkMiner does not maintain a copy of the original videos. When a user plays a lecture, the video is played from the original website on which the lecture video is hosted. As a result, storage requirements for TalkMiner are modest.

How to be the new employee | Career Management | TechRepublic.com - 1 views

  • there is nothing worse than the new kid on the block who comes in with the assumption that he or she can improve the ways things are
  • It’s actually insulting to the existing employees because you’re implying that they didn’t have the know-how to already come upon that conclusion themselves.
  • if you’re a new employee, take your time. Check out the land, learn about the history of your new company, and then, if you think you can make a difference, go for it.
  •
"It's your first week on the job and you're tempted to make a positive splash immediately. But unless you want to alienate yourself, take a step back and just observe."

Foller.me - 2 views

  •
Foller.me is a Twitter service that can provide you with the most detailed information about a specific Twitter user in the least amount of time! Here's how it works. You input a Twitter name into the searchbox and hit enter. Foller.me gets access to the profile of that user via the Twitter API, scans all the public info and the latest 200 tweets! In general, you'd read those 200 messages to get to know what that specific user is all about, right? Well you don't have to! Foller.me has done that for you already, and provides you only with the most significant parts of those 200 tweets. It builds up three tag clouds: topics, #hashtags and @mentions, all based on the user's recent activity, AND excluding all stop words! Isn't that great?

SDSC Education - Bridge Building - 1 views

"For hundreds of years, people have been obsessed with taking the shortcut over valleys and rivers instead of going around them. To do that, we use bridges. In this module, you will have the chance to become a bridge engineer and design and build your own. You will also learn about some of the different types of bridges and how to decide which one to use in different situations."
