    A Webquest is an online activity planned for the student to explore/investigate/synthesize multiple sources of information. Students are provided with a scenario or problem, and are given links to websites where they have to search for information to answer questions or complete a task. This is a great activity for online classes. I have used a webquest in an online course about veteran health care. The students were given a scenario about a homeless veteran they cared for in a clinic setting in their personal hometown. They had to research homelessness, the services offered in their home town, and the disease processes of their veteran. They had to develop either a speech to present the issue at a town hall meeting, develop a proposal to supply a service that was needed by the veteran or write an op-ed piece for their hometown newspaper.

    Over the last decade, neuroscientists distinguished two systems of attention and associated thought. One is directed outward, as when you scroll through your email or play Candy Crush. The other is directed inward, as when you daydream, plan what you'll do tomorrow, or reflect on the past. Clearly, most digital activities call for outwardly directed attention. These two modes of attention work like a toggle switch; when one is on, the other is off. In fact, when attention is outwardly directed, the inwardly directed attention system is somewhat suppressed. Given the amount of time people spend with digital devices, that sounds ominous. Will we actually lose our ability to daydream? Let's hope not.

    An online focus group was used to investigate the experiences of nine individuals with cerebral palsy who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and social media. Information was gathered related to (a) advantages of social media, (b) disadvantages of social media, (c) barriers to successful use, (d) supports to successful use, and (e) recommendations for other individuals using AAC, support personnel, policy makers, and technology developers. Participants primarily chose to focus on social media as a benef cial tool and viewed it as an important form of communication. The participants did describe barriers to social media use (e.g., technology). Despite barriers, all the participants in this study took an active role in learning to use social media. The results are discussed as they relate to themes and with reference to published literature.
