Daniel Donahoo: Shifting the Conversation on Early Childhood and Technology - 3 views

  •  They continue to urge that children under the age of two years have limited access to television or screen based entertainment.
  • They continue to urge that children
  • The challenge then has shifted. It is no longer useful to simply think about limiting children's exposure and access to TV or screens. We have to begin thinking about how we as parents, educators and a community support children to engage with technology in ways that support their development. We need to understand what quality digital tools are and what quality practice looks like. To do otherwise would be to bury our head in the sand and do a disservice to young children. This is not just in the case of children who have access, but children from backgrounds and communities who have limited or no access. The importance of considering the need for them to be embraced by a digitally inclusive society is another issue that needs consideration and further exploration.

In this article by Lisa K. Schanen, the author asserts that, "As with any technology, use of the Internet in the early childhood classroom is most effective when matched with appropriate teaching methods. The key to using the Internet with young children is to make sure their experiences are interactive and integrated into their other learning experiences."

Helping Young Children Develop a Healthy Media Diet - Fred Rogers Center - Blog - 0 views

  •
I understand and agree that the 'media diet' should be looked into more closely... we are all surrounded with media, almost 24/7 .... I'm not buying the examples they give for negatives. "The TV sports program may distract the child from constructive toy play, the parent updating Facebook may be unresponsive to the child's social bids, and the teen game player is unavailable to read to his younger sibling. " Children have always had distractions, a chainsaw in the backyard, a parent on the telephone and a teenager or older sibling too busy to 'play' with a toddler... such is the life of a child... what concerns me with media is the lack of 'down-time' for imagination!!!

This is exactly what we talked about in Unit 6...it takes the teacher too to think outside the box.

"Either individually or as a group students might design one or more of the products or gadgets they need. Those who don't feel as if they can invent might research the patent process. They could pair with the inventors and help complete the necessary diagrams, notes and models for the invention. Budding entrepreneurs could figure out a method of earning the money to pay for the patent. The researchers could provide information about Camp Invention, Inventors Clubs of America, the Duracell/NSTA Scholarship Competition, or the Young Inventors and Creators Program. Students interested in the criminal justice system could report about scams and fraud associated with inventions and creative drawing or writing contests."

Room to Grow website, Technology Literate Early Childhood Educators - 0 views

  •
"Not only can teachers use the web to find endless lesson plan ideas, recipes, and classroom themes, but technology can also be used in the classroom even by preschool students! We must first get away from the concept that "educational software" is the only way to use technology with our youngest students. Frankly, some of this "educational" software is nothing more than electronic dittos. Some educators use the term "edutainment" to describe things that are promoted as educational, but really are more entertainment than educational. When using educational software, we must choose carefully!" (Room to Grow)
