Inquiry learning - 1 views

    Brain based and constructivist learning is a huge area to learn about but basically it's the theory behind inquiry learning. Brain based learning put simply means using what scientists know about the brain to understand how students learn best.  Constructivist learning is the means by which we construct learning. It is based on students participating in constructing their own learning and the teacher facilitating this rather than teaching it to students as in the traditional chalk and talk model.

  • The golden rule of social play is not ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’ Rather, it’s something much more difficult: ‘Do unto others as they would have you do unto them.’ To do that, you have to get into other people’s minds and see from their points of view. Children practise that all the time in social play.

But children who want to continue playing know they have to control that anger, use it constructively in self-assertion, and not lash out.

  • The Technology Integration Matrix (TIM) illustrates how teachers can use technology to enhance learning for K-12 students. The TIM incorporates five interdependent characteristics of meaningful learning environments: active, constructive, goal directed (i.e., reflective), authentic, and collaborative (Jonassen, Howland, Moore, & Marra, 2003). The TIM associates five levels of technology integration (i.e., entry, adoption, adaptation, infusion, and transformation) with each of the five characteristics of meaningful learning environments. Together, the five levels of technology integration and the five characteristics of meaningful learning environments create a matrix of 25 cells as illustrated below.

  • It is amazing to me that the practice of note-taking in class is so widespread, given how ineffective it is
  • Unfortunately, if you try to take notes while you are listening, and then try to study from your notes later, you are receiving half-way exposure twice that doesn’t even add up to a whole
  • The philosophy of note-taking is patently absurd when you really think about it. The idea is that in class, the teacher verbally recites relevant facts, while students are supposed to split their attention between listening and writing them down, essentially taking dictation and creating a very low-fidelity personal copy of their textbook on the fly. Then the students are supposed to go home and re-learn (or learn for the first time) the information that the teacher gave them in class from this hastily constructed replica.
