'Total Gating': Sociality and the Fortification of Networked Spaces Preview Buy now DOI:10.1080/17450101.2012.631814 David W. Hilla* pages 115-129 Available online: 19 Jan 2012 Alert me Abstract Starting with a description of Wynyard Park in Teesside, a development that combines gated residence, workplace and leisure space, 'fear of the other' is identified as a key but underexplored motivating force behind this kind of 'total gating', an argument based on existing empirical studies of gated communities. It is argued that a radical reading of Emmanuel Levinas' ethics of the other can do the explanatory work that would flesh out this allusion to fear: first, by reading the unknowable Levinasian other as repulsive in his/her threat to the individual's ontological security; and second, by making ontological insecurity fundamental to Levinas' account of ethical sociality. To conclude, this work is then situated in a mobility/moorings discourse.

Naturalezas, Saberes y territorios Camcáac (seri) - Centro de Investigación e... - 0 views

Knowledge cities: approaches, experiences and perspectives - Google Livros - 0 views

Knowledge cities: approaches, experiences and perspectives Francisco Javier Carrillo 0 Resenhas Elsevier Butterworth Heinemann, 2006 - 290 páginas Knowledge Cities are cities that possess an economy driven by high value-added exports created through research, technology, and brainpower. In other words, these are cities in which both the private and the public sectors value knowledge, nurture knowledge, spend money on supporting knowledge dissemination and discovery (ie learning and innovation) and harness knowledge to create products and services that add value and create wealth. Currently there are 65 urban development programs worldwide formally designated as knowledge cities. Knowledge-based cities fall under a new area of academic research entitled Knowledge-Based Development, which brings together research in urban development and urban studies and planning with knowledge management and intellectual capital. In this book, Francisco Javier Carillo of the Monterrey Institute of Technology (ITESM) brings together a group of distinguished scholars to outline the theory, development, and realities of knowledge cities. Based on knowledge-based development, the book shows how knowledge can be and is placed at the center of city planning and economic development to enable knowledge flows and innovation to provide a sustainable environment for high value-added products and services. *Well-respected editor brings together distinguished scholars to outline cutting-edge area of research *Interdisciplinary perspectives from urban studies and planning, regional development, knowledge management and intellectual capital *Key benefit is the focus on knowledge in city design, development, and management

Healthy Urban Food Enterprise Development Center - Wallace Center - 0 views

  •
OVERVIEW OF THE WALLACE HUFED CENTER (MORE AT HUFED.ORG) The Wallace HUFED Center supports and enables greater access to healthy affordable food in underserved, limited resource communities across the country.  The Center provides grants and technical assistance to support enterprise development and business-based approaches to getting more healthy food into communities which have limited access, with an emphasis on sourcing locally and regionally produced food. HUFED is unique because it is focused on developing solutions that create jobs, offer economic incentives to farmers, and that can be all or partially self-sustaining beyond the grant period.  To date, the Wallace HUFED Center has awarded 30 grants and is providing technical assistance to many of them. The portfolio of grants include: feasibility study, small enterprise and large enterprise grants; and represent a diverse mix of regions, geographies, urban and rural, demographics, and approaches.  We will be gathering and sharing the knowledge and learning that the Center generates, and ultimately document the models that work, in order to support their replication and adaptation to other regions, and to help inform national decision makers and food access champions. The Wallace HUFED Center is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture and was conceived in Farm Bill 2008.

hanks to everyone who has shared links and leads to webinars and other programs! To clarify. I will post the final list of FREE webinars and other distance learning programs late next week. I will also post separate lists of FOR-FEE online degree programs, certification programs, and fee-based distance learning programs. Examples of these include Ryerson University's Certificate in Food Security and Green Mountain College's new Masters in Sustainable Food Systems. So, please do continue to send me examples of all of the above! However, this is based on what folks (on COMFOOD, SANET, and FOOD PLANNING lists) led me to and what I was able to glean on my own from the Internet. I excluded some recommendations which I felt were too limited in scope. On the whole, the sustainable/organic agriculture and "good food" communities seems to have done an excellent job getting comprehensive programs online. I was less successful in identifying webinars and distance learning programs on food security. I do not know if there's a niche to produce these or whether I was simply not looking in the right place. In any case, please continue to send me links and leads-as well as corrections (I did this rather hastily). I will post the final compilation in the next few weeks-once your suggestions are exhausted. I would eventually like to see a one stop shopping clearing house created where e

CRASSH, University of Cambridge  'Nationalism and the City' Friday 10 February - Saturday 11 February 2012 Location: CRASSH, Alison Richard Building, 7 West Road, Cambridge This conference is about the possibilities and interdictions of cities, the formation of political horizons, and the dynamics of identity. The object is to address an intersection: to consider histories and trajectories of nationalism as they interact with those of urban space and place. Specifically, the conference will explore the possibility of employing spatiality as an interpretive lens to disrupt existing theories of nations and nationalism: how might we re-consider the 'imagined community' by locating it within what urbanists describe as the city's 'real-and-imagined' space? How are political vocabularies like nationalism equipped or subverted by urban environments? In which ways might the city affect, reflect or destabilize discourses of national identity? The event will facilitate discussion on these and other questions, navigating the urban palimpsest with voices from a variety of academic disciplines and professional backgrounds to enliven debates on space, politics and identity. PUGALIS, The evolutionary 'waves' of place-shaping: Pre-, during and post-recession - 0 views

  •
This paper is concerned with the evolution of place-shaping over the past decade or so and its potential future direction, specifically relating to a UK context but with varying aspects of resonance internationally. The methodological approach and empirical originality is derived from practitioner encounters synthesised with theory. Three 'waves' of place-shaping are discernible: renaissance, recession mitigation and recovery. By conceptualising and examining the changing face of place-shaping practice, some broad place-quality trends are identified. Asserting that renaissance interventions were heavily skewed towards enhancing the material aspects of city spaces, it is suggested that recessions provide a useful intersection to reflect on past practice, rethink future policies and sharpen skills. It is within such a climate that innovatory practice can flourish as (public, private and community) actors are challenged to seek alternative ways of working. Questioning the wisdom of cuts in quality, the paper calls for new ways of capturing place quality.
