This internet site provides a variety of resources for learning about the state history of Nebraska. Searching through the wide historical collections online, I discovered a wealth of photographs, maps and even information about individuals and families. The society does provide a specific "Teacher Materials" link. For fourth grade Nebraska social studies standards!

The American Memory collection is such a treasure trove, including this old photograph of Sioux City (as well as many other Iowa towns). This would be really useful in a unit about local history or even for younger students, talking about communities and maps. Students would find it interesting to match up today's view of the city with this one.

This site has photographs of very thought provoking images of the concentration camps. They are graphic in nature and may be upsetting to some. They would be a wonderful supplement to any study of WWII. It gives a small glimpse of how horrific the conditions were for the Jewish prisoners.

I love the visual approach to this website! This could be a great starting point for students to use to experience primary sources. The interactive activities let you use documents to create posters and movies. The pathways option lets you solve the paths that are created and also to create your own paths to share. Students would really love this kind of research!

This site include LOTS of photographs and documents from historical events. They are described briefly and organized by tags. Interesting organizational format could teach not only about historical events, but also about the value of how good tags work. Visitors to the site are challenged to make their own "pathway" through the pictures and documents. Visitors can also make posters and movies with the content they find.

A subsearch of National Geographic. If you are looking for primary source photographs, these are beautiful. They have a direct link for downloading photos to Diigo. Many categories of photos. This particular site on rainforests would be useful to elementary school students doing research on environments, animal habitats, etc.

This University of Washington home page provides access to primary documents, photographs, projects related to the Native American tribes. The initial page allows you to access tribal documents and other collections by country subsections. There is a specific section on Omaha as well as documents on Wounded Knee in the Midwest link. The site accesses many university projects relating to Native Americans, including University of Arizona and University of Oklahoma, all legitimate sites. This would be a great site for social studies students in OPS schools where eighth graders learn about the Trail of Tears and other significant Native American events.

This site is part of the Eisenhower Presidential Library. It would be extremely useful for civil rights units. This is a nice collection of some of Eisenhower's most important correspondence during the Little Rock High School integration crisis. It is also neat to read them because they are scans of the actual typed documents and not just transcriptions. It seems more authentic when students can see the real thing. His notes, diaries, telegrams, letters and press releases really help to show how Eisenhower handled the situation. (Note: There is even an exchange of letters between Jackie Robinson and the president in which they discuss how blacks need to be patient for civil rights)

This site has original photos and captions done by Lewis W. Hines. Hines took up photography as a mines of expressing his social concerns. This site could be used for Am. History, or in some photography classes to study Hines. The photos are very thought provoking and of great quality.

This site offers readers a chance to hear the voices of people the history textbooks have traditionally left out. Interviews done in the 1930's with former slaves are transcribed on this site, some with photographs of the former slave included. The transcripts are difficult to read because of dialect, racial slurs, and some troubling content. With teacher assistance, though, I think these transcripts could help students better understand life for slaves in our country's history.

This site provides first-person accounts from former slaves. I have actually used this site in American Literature to show students what slaves went through. It gives them a voice and students have really connected with the slaves' stories. Students can find lots of material about slavery, but the first-person accounts make it much more personal.

This website is for kid's weather research. There is a breath-taking photo gallery along with a video gallery, games and activities, Science Fair project ideas, a picture of the day and cool facts. My 10 year old daughter was simply fascinated at the photographs! This could definitly supplement the second grade weather unit in Lincoln.
