This government website has an enormous amount of information about the history of the White House and the presidents. There are also pages about the administration, issues and photos/videos. I like the briefing room page with the latest news and current events. Students will like the first pets photo gallery.

This site has a lot of primary source documents about Wisconsin history, but which certainly pertain to the rest of the Midwest, too. The one linked to is of an 1838 newspaper article about the first careful investigation of effigy mounds undertaken in Wisconsin. Certainly this could be useful when studying Native American history, state history, or geography.

This site could be especially helpful when learning about Bleeding Kansas, the Civil War and Plains settlement.

The site offers thousands of pages detailed eyewitness accounts from a number of different groups of people. The documents record the first encounters of the Native Americans and those coming into contact with them for the first time.
This website has archival photos, documents, letters, videos, and maps that tell the history of Nebraska. Resources can be accessed through a table of contents with lesson plans/activities or by a timeline ranging from pre-1500 to the present. The timeline has sections for Nebraska events as well as national and international events at the time. This website is supported by the Nebraska Educational Telecommunications, the Nebraska Department of Education and the Nebraska State Historical Society.
This site has 100 of the top primary doucments in history. I would use this site in the study of the Civil War and link to the telegram that announces the surrender of Fort Sumter.
This site includes material about famous Americans. This site would work for any reports about presidents, about authors, or about musicians. It would also be helpful when researching the various states. As an American Literature teacher I would use the site to have students research Langston Hughes, for instance. That would also be a great source for Black History Month.

This page allows you to search historical newspaper articles throughout history. Students would love this site to research events throughout history by looking at these old newspapers.
This site offers newspaper pages from 1860 to 1992 from various states, including Nebraska. Seeing the front page headlines from a newspaper printed at the time of a historical event could give students a better understanding of how people living at that time viewed the event.
The Smithsonian has webpages for students, families, and teachers. The student site has primary sources in the format of pictures and video footage. They are called IdeaLabs on this site. The IdealLab I found interesting was the Walk on the Moon. It included a video footage from the Apollo landing on the moon and President Kennedy's address to the nation.
This website organizes some of the Smithsonian Institution's vast resources into four topics for students to explore: art, science, history and people/places. There are incredible virtual tours, online interactive labs, games and activities. The site has an educator's section with lesson plans and a search feature to find resources by keyword, grade, and subject.
Explore art, science, history, and people like never before. If you teach the solar system, plate tectonics, volcanoes, or rocks and minerals the Dynamic Earth site is for you. I was so impressed being able to go online and zoom in on hundreds of different rocks, minerals, and gems. Fascinating!
This is a primary source document . . . in Spanish! It is purported to be (as I'm no hispanohablante) a letter from 1570 that "describes the settlement at Ajacàn and requests that Juan de Hinistrosa, the Royal Treasurer of Cuba, send a ship of grain to sustain the settlement." This would be great for Spanish class, obviously, and then maybe for world history after the other students translate it. :-)

This internet site provides a variety of resources for learning about the state history of Nebraska. Searching through the wide historical collections online, I discovered a wealth of photographs, maps and even information about individuals and families. The society does provide a specific "Teacher Materials" link. For fourth grade Nebraska social studies standards!
This is a fabulous site filled with tons of information that could be used when studying history from colonization to the Revolutionary War. There are timelines, maps and documents put into the appropriate category you are looking for during this period of American History. Great site!
The map lover in me is enthralled with this website. The site contains detailed historical maps organized by themes like "Environmental History" and "The Historical Geography of Transportation". Each map then has links to lesson plans organized by K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 with links to additional, applicable primary sources. The site also includes helpful tips for teachers and a useful glossary.
This is an amazing site that is current. It is called the National Security Archive. It has recent documents from the Iraq War, the Torture Archive and September 11th. This site would be excellent for many classrooms. A current events teacher might use it, as well as history, language arts, or government.
This site is presented by the Virginia Center for Digital History and the University of Virginia Library. It showcases two communities during the Civil War. One count was in the north, and one was in the south. It provides an interesting case study of life on both sides of the war. Students and teachers can use this site to compare maps, letters, diaries, newspaper articles, speeches and records in both communities. It also organizes the war into three eras: the eve of war, the war years, and the aftermath.
This site run by the Great War Primary Document Archive site or GWPDA contains a number of resources dealing with WWI. Among the documents are photos, newspaper articles, documents, and treaties. Additionally, documents can be viewed by year or by country of origin.
This site hosted by the Library of Virginia contains a number of transcriptions of primary documents. The documents (most of which are excerpts from larger texts) are related to Virginia and are organized for time period, for example "A Nation in the Making" or "Virginia and the New South". This site would be useful in a number of American History Units as it contains texts from before the Revolution as well as from the Civil War.
