    Looking for something different from the current hysteria of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)? A digital storytelling course started by Jim Groom at the University of Mary Washington (UMW), ds106 was set loose as an open course in January 2011. Yet the UMW catalog does not include such a course. Its actual course designation is CPSC 106 (Computer Science)-a small but telling example of how ds106 plays with and questions the norm.

Hoping to spread the amateur design of more "Wiki Weapons", the rebellious 24-year-old designer nicknamed the blueprints of the weapon, the "Cuomo," named after New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo, who signed a recent ban on all gun magazines in excess of 7 rounds. But that method soon became derailed when various authors began editing the documents. Things continued downhill from there; some students also had problems downloading certain course materials that had been added to the syllabus at the last minute.     This is an interesting article about the potential pitfalls, but no where did I see anything about the spirit of experimentation. When moving forward there are bound to be hiccups.

    I really liked Ms Wirth - I was enjoying the lectures. The other students were so enthusiastic and eager to get started in the discussion groups. I guess it needed a different format? Maybe we need a course on how to design a MOOC. When the number of students start getting in the tens of thousands...small discussion groups are a little more complicated...It will be interesting to see how this moves forward.

Some students also remark that they found it really hard to give feedback, since they just weren't used to giving feedback to other students about their work. The key is DETAIL, very very very specific details, rather than general comments like "good work" or "I really liked your stories."
