Review: Internet History, Technology, and Security - 0 views

  •
"This course was really interesting but more like a PBS show. It consisted mainly of a series of interviews that Chuck Severance had done over the years, which he then strung together to make it into a history. While that is all true, it doesn't convey Dr. Severance' contribution to the whole. Clearly, his perspective was essential and his being present at the conversation at the actual points in history made his current insights more valuable."

Manuel Lima: A visual history of human knowledge | TED Talk | TED.com - 0 views

  •
"How does knowledge grow? Sometimes it begins with one insight and grows into many branches; other times it grows as a complex and interconnected network. Infographics expert Manuel Lima explores the thousand-year history of mapping data - from languages to dynasties - using trees and networks of information. It's a fascinating history of visualizations, and a look into humanity's urge to map what we know."

How To Teach an Online Public Course on The History and Future of Higher Education - 0 views

  •
"I'm a finalist for teaching a Coursera MOOC next year on "The History and Future of Higher Education."  Naturally, I am doing this because I want to improve the future of higher education and add as much innovation as possible.  I'm interested in ways that an online  course with a relatively static form could become a platform for innovation.    And I will use this hastac.org site as a testbed for analysis of the teaching and learning as it is happening and as a place of reflection on the process and possibilities."

What Do You Call It When Colleges Turn Their Research Powers On Their Own Practices? | ... - 0 views

  •
"DeVaney compared campus innovation to Japanese pottery. Specifically, he invoked the ancient practice of Kintsugi, the art of repairing broken bowls with brightly-colored laquers, so that the break becomes part of the object's history that is celebrated rather than disguised. "By preserving the damage, by showing that history of an object or an institution, we're able to enlighten those around us," he says. "We're able to illuminate pathways. We're able to help other institutions take advantage of the wisdom that we gained from the journeys that we were on.""

To MOOC or not to MOOC? - 0 views

  •
"Most of the conversations were about the pitfalls of producing MOOCs. I wanted to talk more about how universities that may use other schools' MOOCs might consume them. Most of the people here are from disciplines outside of the humanities, so I tried to explain that what works in math or CS will not necessarily work for history, especially history survey classes. While everyone seemed interested in improving pedagogy, there was a kind of disturbing assumption underlying all my discussions that any class that doesn't use technology is somehow broken by definition."

Why Isn't Gatsby in the Public Domain? - 0 views

  •
"We feel the pernicious practical effects of lengthy copyright terms every day. For example, a study last year of books on Amazon showed that books published after the critical public domain cut-off date of 1923 are available at a dramatically lower rate than books from even an entire century before. The result is a "missing 20th century" in the history of books."

Independent Reading: Personal History Project - 0 views

  •
The goal was to link together some of the close reading they were already doing in their weekly reading trackers, as well as tap into their own triumphs and struggles with reading over time. Posted below is the (lengthy) project instructions. Students were not responsible for every prompt - the idea was to give them many springboards for their own thinking.

Dark Social: We Have the Whole History of the Web Wrong - Alexis C. Madrigal - The Atla... - 0 views

  •
"The main situations in which this happens are email programs, instant messages, some mobile applications*, and whenever someone is moving from a secure site ("https://mail.google.com/blahblahblah") to a non-secure site (http://www.theatlantic.com).  This means that this vast trove of social traffic is essentially invisible to most analytics programs. I call it DARK SOCIAL. It shows up variously in programs as "direct" or "typed/bookmarked" traffic, which implies to many site owners that you actually have a bookmark or typed in www.theatlantic.com into your browser. But that's not actually what's happening a lot of the time. "

Florida May Reduce Tuition for Select Majors - 0 views

  •
"To nudge students toward job-friendly degrees, the governor's task force on higher education suggested recently that university tuition rates be frozen for three years for majors in "strategic areas," which would vary depending on supply and demand. An undergraduate student would pay less for a degree in engineering or biotechnology - whose classes are among the most expensive for universities - than for a degree in history or psychology."

Rice's Open Textbook Arm to Double Its Offerings - 0 views

  •
"OpenStax College, the year-old Rice University startup that produces free online textbooks, will more than double the number of fields in which it has titles by 2015, the university announced today. A grant from the Laura and John Arnold Foundation will allow OpenStax College to add to its current offerings in physics and sociology, and its two new biology books and an introductory anatomy text coming out this fall. The new titles will be in precalculus, chemistry, economics, U.S. history, psychology and statistics, Rice said, toward its goal of producing high-quality open-source books in the 25 most-enrolled college courses. OpenStax says its existing two texts have been downloaded more than 70,000 times so far."

"The two industrial giants aren't so much showing off as signalling transformation. Both firms are going through the most profound change in their corporate histories, attempting to switch from being makers of machines into fully digital businesses. GE's chief executive, Jeff Immelt, says the plan is to join the world's top ten software firms with sales of programs and services worth $15bn as early as 2020."

"Thanks to a new addition to Google's Takeout service, YouTube users can now download all of their videos in one fell swoop. For those unfamiliar, Google's Takeout service, which is a part of Google's "Data Liberation Front," allows users to download key data hosted by Google in one file.
