Reaching Students - 0 views

  •
"Based on the research synthesized in the 2012 NRC report Discipline-Based Education Research, Reaching Students strives to answer these questions and presents the best thinking to date on teaching and learning undergraduate science and engineering. Focusing on the disciplines of astronomy, biology, chemistry, engineering, geosciences, and physics, this book is an introduction to strategies to try in undergraduate classrooms. Concrete examples and case studies illustrate how experienced instructors and leaders have applied evidence-based approaches to address student needs, encouraged the use of effective techniques within a department or an institution, and addressed the challenges that arose along the way."

What are digital badges? - 0 views

  •
"Digital Badges in higher education also have an additional ability that is newly available - the ability to embed the badge into social platforms and have others "see into" the learning that has been accomplished via metadata that contains valuable information about the issuer, criteria, skills and evidence."

The myth that "students are comfortable with technology" is prevalent and pro... - 0 views

  •
"students have to (first) be comfortable with the technology, (second) they have to understand the educational use of the technology, and (third) they have to adjust to new instructional methods that use technology. Expecting that they will quickly and easily make the transition to blended learning is a recipe for failure."

"the charter schools seem to mine the local district of low-cost special education students while leaving the traditional schools with students who have the most severe disabilities. He points to data showing the district's charter schools tends to serve high proportions of low-cost special needs students - those with speech and hearing disabilities, for instance - while serving low proportions of high-cost special needs students, such as those with autism or emotional problems."

""Our employees are already posting online anyways - we should use it," says Celinda. According to Nielsen, 84% of people will act on recommendations from people they know. Also, high quality candidates tend to know other high quality candidates. If your employees are satisfied at work and posting their recommendations on social networks, you're more likely to recruit other talented people."

"The learning spaces an institution plans will inevitably be in a network of other spaces.  Being not just aware of those connections, but actually leveraging that awareness, making the spaces explicitly connected to one another, raising the visibility of the spaces to teachers and learners alike, can have an impact. Combining Peer Discussion with Instructor Explanation Increases Student Learning from I... - 0 views

  •
"Use of in-class concept questions with clickers can transform an instructor-centered "transmissionist" environment to a more learner-centered constructivist classroom. To compare the effectiveness of three different approaches using clickers, pairs of similar questions were used to monitor student understanding in majors' and nonmajors' genetics courses. After answering the first question individually, students participated in peer discussion only, listened to an instructor explanation only, or engaged in peer discussion followed by instructor explanation, before answering a second question individually. Our results show that the combination of peer discussion followed by instructor explanation improved average student performance substantially when compared with either alone. When gains in learning were analyzed for three ability groups of students (weak, medium, and strong, based on overall clicker performance), all groups benefited most from the combination approach, suggesting that peer discussion and instructor explanation are synergistic in helping students. However, this analysis also revealed that, for the nonmajors, the gains of weak performers using the combination approach were only slightly better than their gains using instructor explanation alone. In contrast, the strong performers in both courses were not helped by the instructor-only approach, emphasizing the importance of peer discussion, even among top-performing students."

Uncle Sam Is Footing the Bill For Student-Debt Relief - The Atlantic - 0 views

"The U.S. Department of Education is sticking to the rosier news in a brief report released this week that shows the number of U.S. student-loan holders enrolled in income-based repayment plans has jumped by more than 50 percent since last year. According to the government, 3.9 million borrowers have signed up for income-based repayment plans as of this June. But while these programs, which have existed in some form since 1994 but were supercharged only in the past few years, can cut monthly loan payments by hundreds of dollars for individual borrowers, their cost to taxpayers overall is rising fast."

"if you aren't the best lecturer in the world, why shouldn't your boss replace you with whoever is? And if you aren't the one providing the content, why did you spend all those years in graduate school anyway? Teaching, you say? Well, administrators can pay graduate students or adjuncts a lot less to do your job. Pretty soon, there might even be a computer program that can do it."

Digital Pedagogy Lab: Key Moments - Hybrid Pedagogy - 0 views

  •
""It's time to embrace our very human inefficiencies." Audrey Watters struck a post-digital note as she wrapped her opening keynote on the first day of the Digital Pedagogy Lab 2015 Institute. She reminded the audience that teaching is affective labor, that it requires heart, patience, diligence, and creativity - things which technology fails in its attempts to mimic - and she asked, "What happens to love, to our soul, to our labor as we digitize the world?""

Do I Own My Domain If You Grade It? - 0 views

  •
"The first type of 'Domain' took audience into account, considering the implications of public scholarship, representation, and student agency. The second, in many ways, mirrored the traditional pedagogical structure by assigning papers or short answer assignments to be posted online through blogs. This is not necessarily bad, but also doesn't necessarily empower."
