D#5, HW#4: Write On Reader - Forms of Writing - Directions - 0 views

Simplistic instructions, but some good points and tips for writing clear directions. Also, a great example of how a background can make for distracting reading if not handled appropriately (contrast = poor).

This website would be the most beneficial for project 1. It has a nice layout of everything from articles, books, publishing, writing styles, etc. This could clear up any confusion I may have in going about writing about my topic.

How to Write for Busy, Grouchy People - 0 views

  •
I like this set of instructions because it provides a touch of humor with each step. Now I know everyone in this class are not grouchy people but I'm sure we all live busy lives.
  •
This site gives some good pointers for writing instructions in a real world setting.
  •
This site brings up some very good points, and it is a fairly quick read. When writing instructions, we should assume that whomever will be reading them wants them to be plainly spoken and easy to understand rather than some drawn out technical babble.

Although this site is in italian, it completely follows the CRAP Design Principles -White space -Plenty of contrast between light and dark text -grouping and alignment -Proximity between text, links and images
  •
This was a good example Kyle. I like the monochromatic color. even then you still have contrast but just in gray scale. Can you speak or read Italian?
  •
@Sarah I can't actually speak or read italian :( however, the Google Chrome browser allows me to automatically translate pages for free. So that is pretty nice :)

I chose this website because it has contrast because of the colors it uses, and the color dont overwhelm you. it also has repetition becuse it uses the same font in different areas. its also well aligned because it make you focus on a certain area. it also has proximity it doesnt have so much stuff to fill the page.

Contrast: White background, main story in the center of the page. Summary of story underneath with related links smaller, different colored text to bottom right. Repetition: All links are colored blue and all bullet points and listing numbers are purple. Yahoo sites in the menu are all black with thumbnail pictures. Titles for each grouping box are in black capital letters with subtitles in grey. Alignment: Everything aligned to the left throughout entire webpage. Proximity: Alike items are grouped into boxes with a title in black capital letters.

Follows CRAP principles. The Yahoo title and logo are both in purple. C= The whole background is white. The top news stories are posted in the top middle page. All titles are the same color. R= Yahoo it repeated throughout the site. All title colors are the same. It is uniform throughout. A= everything on the site is left align, making it look more organized. P= Groups are all linked together
  •
The website does in fact follow the CRAP principles to a T. A very good reason for this is that there is a huge team of web designers working for yahoo, thus leading to an excellent website.
  •
i love yahoo's webpage and i think that it follows CRAP very well. this page is one that im on often and its so simple not to clutered and easy to find what i need:) i think this is a great pick.
  •
yes, Yahoo does following the principles quite well. i tend to favor a more simplistic design and so for news/browser sites, I would actually prefer www.msn.com It seems to be the same type of content but set up in a way that is a little bit easier for the eye to read. Maybe because it is right-aligned and not left like so many other sites?

Dodgers - 1 views

I'm actually going to use this site as a "what not to do" site. As much as I love the dodgers, I must say I've never thought this was a good site. The only reason that I know how to get around and find things is because I visit it all the time. I believe its very clustered and not organized well.
  •
interesting comments Garrett. I have noticed that many sports team websites seem to be set up the same way as the Dodgers and yet we don't notice since we are so used to navigating it, as you mentioned.

Contrast- The use of red lettering for the title of the company and well for having a model as the background for the page. With centered bigger letters in the center of the page. With a small picture in the corner scrolling through. Repetition- This can be seen through the small font used for the links on this page. That's all though. Allignment- The menu on the left is all alligned to the left while the menu at the top is in a straight line that looks centered. And in the bottom right corner there's a picture box. Proximitiy- There's a lot of room on the page. There is hardly any pictures posted on here and the picture box that is shown is very small and takes up little room. Same goes for the links where the fonts are small and do not take up any room at all. *Note* There are advertising sustainable styles so I wonder if they were potraying that through the use of saving space?
  •
This was a good example Alina. There wasn't too much content and it was aligned very well. Good choice.

Contrast-spacing is very linar squares and rectangles, a focal point is the red at the top to attract attention to the site and have their viewers interested. The headings of most importance are in black bold size color, and the text is smaller and in a bluecolor.Color is attractive to where it is eye catching but easy on the eyes with black, white , blue, and red. Repetition-again the color is repatative with red, black, and white. repetative elements such as video clips and new. The format, of it is organized, with the subjects running along the top of the page that allows the viewer to go to exactly they want to know. below the subject tabs there are groups of related information for example how the bottom of the top news there are bullet points of what the news is about. Then towards the bottom of the website there are grouped topics that have the topics of which the tabs on the top. Except these have subtext to other related topics that fall under that subjects they are in a same size box which groups them. Allignment-nothing is centered all text is left justifyed, the information is visually connected to find information much easier and all is aligned to one box or another. Proximity-related items all the headers of the news each have its own box and all the news are related is under each of the heading, The white/light grey backround is evenly separated to give it a balance.

I think that the strongest point for this website would be its alignment and proximity -columns and rows for easy reading -proximity, the images are all grouped together for easy reading -repetition, images and fonts are used consistently

This site, even though not quite as clean as most, still does the job. I think the best aspect of C.R.A.P is proximity. everything that is related, is together, and its not confusing to read.

This is my favorite web-page out of the four website I chose to display my C.R.A.P principals. I realize this web-page is a little bit flashy however I do feel that it doesn't a good job of contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity.
