Sul filo di lana, nel corso dell'ultima discussione in merito al decreto Milleproroghe, il senatore del Pdl Salvo Fleres ha presentato un proprio emendamento che prevedeva lo stop incondizionato al rilascio di nuove licenze per le parafarmacie e il contingentamento di quelle già aperte ad un parametro d'abitanti (una ogni 20mila abitanti) tale da determinare la chiusura della maggioranza degli esercizi aperti con il decreto Bersani. (poposta che non ha trovato seguito per la presentazione da parte del Governo di un maxiemendamento).

Prysmian declared the offer it advanced for Draka Holding on January 5, 2011 unconditional. The offer concerns all Draka shares in circulation, valuing them at EUR 8.60 apiece in cash plus 0.6595 ordinary Prysmian share. All offer conditions, except for the condition for granting all necessary authorisations, have been fulfilled, Prysmian said, adding it was waiving the regulatory condition. Prysmian will start a post-tender offer, which will run until 22 February, for the remaining minority shares in the Dutch company, at a price of EUR17.20 (USD23.43) per share in cash and stock. Including the preference shares to be acquired from Draka's minority shareholders ASR Levensverzekering and Kempen, Prysmian's holding will reach 91.4% in total, the buyer added. Upon a successful acquisition, Draka shares will cease trading on the Amsterdam stock market.

"Central America's wind-power generation grew 120% between 2009 and 2010, according to a new study published by regional economic think tank Comision Economica para America Latina (CEPAL). All together, the region comprising Guatemala, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Panama and Belize, generated 237.2 Gwh of wind energy during the period. This came mostly from projects in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, CEPAL said, adding that Central America has attracted rising wind investments due to improving regulation for the technology."

LS Cable & Systems, the world's third largest manufacturer of wire and cable, reaffirmed on 23rd November that it is seeking to become the world's largest wire and cable manufacturer by 2020, and that it is targeting the value-added cable market in India as part of its strategy. The company, which according to chief executive officer Koo Cha-yol "has 33 manufacturing firms, 64 operational bases and four research centers in 26 countries," generates 60% of its sales abroad. LS Cables & Systems has been expanding these overseas sales through acquisitions, in recent years buying American cable maker Magnet Wire in 2008, and Chinese cable maker Hongchi in 2011, giving it access to the world's largest markets.

Jiangxi Copper, the large vertically-integrated Chinese miner, smelter and semis manufacturer announced on 27th March that its output of semi-finished copper products was 582,100t in 2012, an 18.6% increase on 2011. The company said that it expects to expand production further in 2013, to 845,000t, which would be an annual increase of 45%. The company will do this by adding additional capacity, increasing available capacity to 920,000t in 2013, from 720,000t in 2012.

In an interview during the annual CESCO week, Luvata's VP of metals sales Ian Scarlett said that the current warehousing activities are causing distortions to the LME's function as a market of last resort. The VP said he would like to see premiums reflect current market conditions and that some market players could distort the system, adding that the "copper value chain is broken." Mr Scarlett said that it is "not logical" for premiums to be rising during this current period of an increasing market surplus.

An official from SDI La Farga LLC's said on 11th December that the company is producing limited amounts of wirerod at its new US $39M plant in New Haven, Indiana. The new facility, a joint venture between Spain's La Farga Group and Steel Dynamics Inc, produces wirerod from number 2 scrap copper rather than cathode. The company official said "we've produced quality rod and are in the process of getting approval of customers and we have done so with several customers." He added that plant officials are "waiting for more customer orders to start producing more".

Anhui Jincheng, the Shanghai-listed producer of copper PSSF, said on 26th March that it produced 93,872t of copper PSSF in 2012, a 13% y-o-y increase from 2011. Despite the increase in output, the company made a net loss of RMB57M in 2012 from a profit of RMB24M in 2011 (loss of US$9M from a profit of US$3.8M). Remarking on the results the company said that "uncertainties in the global economy, the euro debt crisis, plus the weak Chinese economy, has negatively impacted demand by the downstream processing sector last year."

Talking at the annual CESCO/CRU World Copper Conference, CRU Principal Consultant Vivienne Lloyd said that up to 2Mt of copper demand could be lost over the next five years due to substitution and consolidation amongst Chinese semis producers. Lloyd said that the areas under the greatest threat from substitution are the automotive wiring harness sector and the HVAC sector. However, CRU believes that the aluminium/copper price ratio is likely to have peaked in 2012 at around 4:1, and will fall back gradually to 2017 reaching 3:1, which should relieve some of the substitution pressures.

Japan's domestic shipments of residential air conditioners rose 12 percent in March from a year earlier to 678,736 units, the Japan Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association said.
