Solving the Energy Crisis - 10,000 Humongous Foil Balloons (GALLERY) - 0 views

  • Party balloons may be the next big thing in solar power. Cool Earth has made some giant balloons with gizmos inside that will convert the collected sun and focus it onto a cell. They have been given a big chunk of moola to make 10,000 balloons to cover 80 acres in California and hopefully in a couple years be generating 10 megawatts of power.

Japan - Hitachi Cable to reduce rolled copper output by 7% in FY2009 - 0 views

  •
Hitachi Cable said that it plans to cut rolled copper output by 7% in FY2009 compared to FY2008. As a result, the company will now produce 5,760 tonnes of rolled copper output per month. Hitachi Cable intends to expand the sales of growing items, such as copper tube for heat pump hot water supply systems and rolled copper foil for lithium ion batteries. In copper strip, the company experienced very low demand in February but anticipates that it will improve in FY2009.

SuperPower to double its production of super conducting wirerod - 0 views

  •
Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd., Yazaki Corp. and other automotive wiring harness manufacturers have temporarily shut down some of their production lines in Thailand. This follows the severe flooding which directly led to Honda Motor Co. closing down local assembly lines at its factory in Bangkok as well as Toyota Motor Co. shutting down its three plants in Eastern Thailand due to parts shortages.

Japan Metal Daily reported that Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd.'s construction of new automotive wiring harness manufacturing facilities will be ongoing until April 2012. This follows a press release from Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd. in February 2011 detailing the company's proposals for new wiring harness production facilities in Vietnam and China. The February announcement states that the company's Vietnam-based production will increasingly supply Japan and the US, whereas Chinese production will serve local needs as well as demand from Japan and the US. The new Vietnamese factories were originally intended to begin operations in October 2011, whereas the start date outlined for facilities in China was June 2012.

JX Nippon Mining & Metals, an integrated Japan-based refined copper and semi-finished products fabricator, began full-scale production of an ultrathin rolled copper foil, measuring between 6 and 9 microns in thickness. The new products are suitable for use in smartphones and tablet PCs. Advances made in the company's rolling and surface roughening process technology led to the development of the new products. The company estimates that it holds a 75% global market share of treated rolled copper foil, which finds its main application in flexible printed circuit boards for mobile devices.

Taiwan - Japanese earthquake impacts Taiwanese copper semis consuming industries - 0 views

  •
Taiwanese end-use sectors that consume copper semis will be impacted by the earthquake in Japan, according to the Industrial Economics & Knowledge Centre. End-use sectors that will face a disruption in the supply or raw materials and parts include display panels, semiconductors, machinery equipment and solar cells. Major Japanese fabricators of electrodeposited copper foil and rolled copper foil JX Nippon Mining & Metals and Hitachi Cable have factories in areas that have been impacted by the earthquake.

Taiwan - Furukawa Electric approves Taiwan-based copper semis project - 0 views

  •
It was reported that Furukawa Electric, the Japan-based copper products manufacturer, has approved to invest NT$450M (US$15.46M) in Taiwan-based projects. The decision involves production facilities in Taiwan for the fabrication of rolled copper foil to be used in printed circuit boards and lithium batteries. The plan is partly attributed to the appreciation of the Japanese yen and the impact of the recent devastating earthquake.

Lower activity at Chinese PSSF producers in October - 0 views

  •
An October survey of 21 Chinese copper plate, sheet, strip and foil producers, with a annual capacity of 984,200t/y, showed that operating rates fell to 56.40% in October, down 1.13 percentage points from September. The survey also reported that raw materials inventories held by producers fell to 20.08% of production, down 4.61 percentage points from September. The survey cited sluggish demand from European and US markets as a factor weighing on PSSF demand, and said the orders ahead of the Christmas period were still low. The survey also highlighted producer pessimism about the copper price as a factor in lower raw materials stock holdings.

Furukawa Electric to consolidate wire rods division - 0 views

  •
On 1st November, Furukawa Electric Company announced further details about plans to increase profits by JPY18B (US$226M) by 2015. The company aims to do this through consolidation of their copper wirerod and optical cables division and pulling out of some areas including winding wire. The company will also move production of copper foil and electric wires overseas. Furukawa Electric cited the mature Japanese market and limited opportunities for growth in this market as reasons for the restructuring.

China - Low utilisation rates at Chinese copper flat rolled products fabricators linked to weak demand - 0 views

  •
According to a survey performed by Antaike, the mining and metals information provider, average operating rates of facilities in China producing copper flat rolled products fell to 55.8%, down by 3.4% m-o-m in October. The reduction in plant utilisation has been attributed to weak end-use demand from the domestic electronics and automotive sectors since the end of H1 2011, as well as decreasing export orders. Additionally, the volatile copper price is thought to have led to production cuts at copper plate, sheet, strip and foil fabrication plants. The survey also indicated that 50% of the 22 manufacturers sampled believe that demand will continue to decline and 40% think that it will not grow in the short term. Companies cited decreased buying associated with the Christmas and New Year holidays and shrinking exports of end-use products such as electronics and home appliances due to uncertainty stemming from the European debt crisis.

  • High-performance, low-cost passive copper cabling remains the preferred alternative for short-reach applications in the data center. However, standard round copper cables can be bulky and consume precious space. A recent innovation in manufacturing technology by 3M has resulted in the development of a uniquely shielded, thin, ribbon-style copper cable. The cable has the ability to fold multiple times and maintain signal integrity, allowing for higher-density racks and space savings. A major barrier to decreasing the size and stiffness of a round cable is inherent in the construction of traditional cable. This is an issue because a round copper cable can extend up to nine inches when routed behind a cabinet. In conventional, twin axial constructions, the shield is applied by wrapping it spirally around the insulated wire pair. This layer is then overwrapped to provide support and retain the primary shield wrap, increasing the stiffness of the pair. Multiple pairs are then cabled and an overall foil and braided shield are typically applied, thus further increasing the cable bulk and stiffness.
