The global wind turbine market has seen rapid shifts in scale and product sophistication on the back of booming demand for wind power globally. Effective wind turbine pricing is a major challenge for all manufacturers as they strive to keep pace with higher volume and more complex demand. Suppliers are expanding their sales and production globally. Turbine prices and cost of installations are increasing as multiple players move on 2 MW turbines and above.

The European Commission has adopted a third package of legislative proposals to ensure a real and effective choice of supplier and benefits to every single EU citizen. The Commission's proposals put consumer choice, fairer prices, cleaner energy and security of supply at the centre of its approach.

, "Working with battery suppliers and manufacturers is a bit of chicken and egg scenario. Until you have a reasonable market and growth, the amount of cost to install capacity and do the development is an issue. We now feel we have enough data to say that, for electric vehicles, the batteries meet the durability life requirements. So that's a big plus."

Most of Wang's neighbors were not so fortunate. Recyclers in Qingyuan have lost an estimated $4.4 billion since the bottom dropped out of the marketWidely known as a copper recycling center, Qingyuan once had a workforce of 80,000, employed by 22 national companies and more than 150 medium-sized enterprises. Of those, 20 percent have gone bankrupt, 50 percent have been cut in half, and the remainder has lost about one-third of their market value, according to a local recycling association. For Qingyuan, the disaster was unpredictable, but instructive. Recyclers typically locked in the price when they signed a contract with foreign suppliers. Saddled with fixed operating costs, that left them nowhere to go when the price for their product dropped, according to Yan Jinming, general manager of CITIC Securities Futures.

Ohio-based supplier of specialty copper alloy products Brush Engineered Materials Inc. reported second quarter results. Q2 2009 sales were US$174.1 million, 29% lower than the same period a year ago but an improvement of 29% from the first quarter this year. Net loss was US$0.8 million versus net income of US$7.2 million in Q2 2008. The Specialty Engineered Alloys segment reported Q2 sales of US$41.2 million, compared to sales of US$83.0 million the same period in 2008. Operating loss for Q2 was US$9.3 million compared to an operating profit of US$4.8 million a year ago. The decline in segment sales was primarily due to the effect of the severe global recession in key markets including telecommunications, computer, automotive electronics, oil and gas, aerospace and heavy equipment. A portion of the decline was due to lower metal prices. The company is foreseeing an improving order book and is expecting to generate a slight profit in Q3 this year with higher sales volume and positive impact from its cost-reduction activities.

Mexico, one of the leading suppliers of oil to the United States, has increasingly embraced alternative energy in the face of dwindling crude output, infrastructure and investment. In response to energy and economic woes, President Felipe Calderón has pushed through energy reforms, pledging that Mexico will be producing a minimum of 2,500 megawatts of wind capacity by the time his term ends in 2012. So far, Mexico's progress has been impressive. In 2005, the nation only produced 3 megawatts electricity from wind. By the end of 2010, the country had 519 megawatts of installed wind power. And the future prospects look promising.

The US-based Copper and Brass Servicenter Association, a trade group representing primarily North American brass mills, reported that shipments of brass mills products amounted to 19.68Mlb (8,927t) in September, a decline of 14.9% from August and an annual decline of 8.1%. Shipments of copper sheet fell by 21.7% m-o-m or 961,000lb to 3.45Mlb (436t to 1,565t) and copper rod declined by 14.4% m-o-m or 807,000lb to 4.77Mlb (366t to 2,164t). Shipments of brass sheet and alloy tube also registered declines in September compared to the previous month, 6.9% m-o-m and 37.4% m-o-m respectively. The survey reported that half of participants expected orders to fall in the coming quarter compared to the previous quarter. When asked about lead times, half of the suppliers surveyed reported that their lead times had shortened in September compared to the previous three months.

It has been announced that General Cable Corp. acquired Delphia Produtos Eletricos Ltda., a Brazilian automotive parts manufacturer although terms of the deal have not been disclosed.. Delphia manufactures automotive ignition wire harnesses sold into the Brazilian market and reported revenues of about $20 million in 2011. General Cable had net sales of $5.9 billion in 2011. General Cable CEO Gregory Kenny said, "over the past several years, through our expansion strategy and continuous improvement culture we have enhanced our service capabilities in a wide range of transportation and industrial applications for original equipment manufacturers, suppliers and distributors. We are well positioned to further enhance the value proposition to our global customers having achieved another important milestone with the acquisition of Delphia in this significant market in South America." Delphia is located in Sao Bernardo do Campo, Sao Paulo State and will continue to operate as Delphia under the umbrella of General Cable Automotiva Brasil.

Sumiden Hitachi Cable said it forecasts Japanese electric cable makers' shipments of VVF (vinyl insulated vinyl sheathed flat-type) cable will total an average of 4,500-4,700 tonnes per month in copper weight in fiscal 2012 ending in March 2013. This would be an increase of around10%. However, if the reconstruction works in disaster areas affected by the Japanese earthquake were delayed, the monthly shipment forecasts could show a slight fall. Sumiden Hitachi Cable is the largest sales company of building cables and wires in Japan and is jointly controlled by Hitachi Cable, Sumitomo Electric Industries and Tatsuta Electric Wire & Cable. Sumiden Hitachi Cable is the third largest supplier of VVF cable in Japan.

The Saudi Cable Company announced that it has secured orders from two of Korea's biggest construction firms, taking its total order value for the month to over SAR1B (approximately US$266.6M). The Jeddah-based supplier of copper cables received a SAR63M (approximately US$16.8M) order from Doosan Company, a diversified firm covering construction and engineering among other sectors, and a SAR56M (approximately US$14.93M) order from Hyundai Engineering. Both mandates will be supplied in Q1 of next year.

TEPCO, a Japanese power supplier announced that it will increase its electricity prices for corporate clients by an average of 17% to cover higher energy costs for the use of thermal power plants while the firm idles many of its nuclear power facilities. The Japan Copper and Brass Association diapproves of the move, which it says would add ¥1.2 - 1.3B/y in production costs at the affected brass mills. The 23 copper product fabrication sites within the TEPCO supply area account for 43% of total copper semis output in Japan.

Furukawa Electric announced that it will commission a new electrolytic copper foil factory, located in Taiwan, two months ahead of schedule, in July 2012. The facility is designed to produce copper foil suitable for the manufacture of lithium ion batteries. Furukawa decided to offshore the foil production capacity last year because the appreciated yen had been limiting its competitiveness in supplying the high growth automotive lithium-ion battery market in Taiwan. The company expects to halve its electricity costs in Taiwan, which represent 30% of the total cost of electrolytic foil production in Japan. Furthermore, it is feared that these costs in Japan are likely to escalate with the ongoing strain on power generation and transmission suppliers. This was caused by the continuing temporary closure of nuclear power facilities as it reviews its position on the use of nuclear power generation.
