China National Bureau of Statistics - Power Transmission, Distribution, Control Equipme... - 0 views

  • Promoted by key projects including large-scale long-distance power transmission, ultra-high voltage grid construction, power grid construction in new rural areas and railway electrification reconstruction, the power transmission and distribution and control equipment industry of China achieved rapid development in 2009, with the annual sales revenue and total profit of RMB 656.19 billion and RMB 49.13 billion, a YoY rise of 15.7% and 19.5% respectively. Boosted by the fast growth of power transmission & distribution and control equipment industry, five sub-sectors mounted up vigorously in 2009. In particular, capacitor and corollary equipment sub-sectors showed the most rapid growth, with the prime operating revenue and total profit increasing by 28.3% and 63.3% respectively from a year earlier. This can be ascribed to the following three factors: firstly, China has made much progress in the development of ultra-high voltage and extra-high voltage technologies; secondly, it is the period from 2009 to 2010 that the ultra-high voltage demonstration projects in China have been constructed in succession, characterizing huge investment; thirdly, China has actively promoted the concept of energy conservation and emission reduction and paid increasing attention to voltage quality, safety and electricity saving, etc.

Southern Copper optimistic on growing copper demand - 0 views

  • He said that during Q2, global copper demand was up 4.8% QoQ thanks to demand from emerging economies led by China and a recovery in physical consumption in the US and Europe. During the Q2 of this year, US and European demand for fine copper increased by 22% and 4% respectively when compared to the Q1 of this year. These are very positive developments that support our conviction of higher physical demand from now on. In addition, copper production has not grown at the same rate as demand which will further support prices for the red metal. He added that a clear sign of this is the consistent reduction of the combined copper inventories of the London Metal Exchange, COMEX and Shanghai warehouses. At their latest peak in February this year combined inventories were 815,000t." According to Chilean state copper commission Cochilco's weekly report, global stocks stood at 609,478 tonnes.

Cable maker Nexans announced its H1 2008 financial statements on 24th July. The company reported H1 sales dropped by 6.28% year-on-year to €3,554M (US$5,572M) as a result of deliberate reduction of the external sales in the electrical wires business. Operating margin was €220M (US$345M), which is an increase of 18% from same period last year. H1 net income was €119M (US$187M), which was comparatively more stable than the other sectors due to less exposure to tax rate change. Nexans believes that the increased uncertainty in the economic environment had not affected its profitability as operating margin increased to its target amount. It also announced that it has abandoned the plan to sale its automotive cable harnesses business.

Aurubis AG, the Germany based refined copper and copper products manufacturer, said that actual business operations do not reflect the pronounced negative mood indicated by the International Monetary Fund's (IMF)growth forecast reduction for developed countries. Citing the Eurozone's 5.3% y-o-y rise in industrial production in August, as well as strong recent performances in Germany's electrical and automotive industry, Aurubis surmises that there is no sign of a slump in orders as implied by the negative market sentiment.

'Hydrogen Economy' Offers Promising Path to Decarbonization - 2 views

  •
Note that low-cost hydrogen relies on the availability of low-cost electricity. So there needs to be a good reason not to use electricity directly. This reason could be a need for a reduction agent, or a preference for combustion technologies. In any case, it will be a reverse world - gas more expensive than electricity.
