China's Refined Copper Output Down 0.5% in August - 0 views

  •
Difficulties securing raw materials led to a 0.5% y-o-y drop in output of refined copper, to 320,000t, according to the National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBSC). A downturn in demand coupled with increasing raw materials prices has produced very difficult operating conditions, with one Henan-based trader commenting that, "unless the Shanghai copper price recovers, the fall in Chinese copper output is likely to extend until September." Over the first eight months of 2008, refined copper output increased to 2.47m tonnes, or by 15% on last year. However, some are beginning to question China's ability to sustain the rapid rate of growth it has shown recently, leading to a drop-off in demand.

» 100 gigabits per second over copper? | Emerging Technology Trends | ZDNet.com - 0 views

  • According to Penn State engineers, transmission rates of 100 gigabits per second are possible today over copper. But only on distances of less than 100 meters. And only with high-end Category 7 copper cables. These Ethernet cables are made up of four pairs of twisted wires shielded to reduce crosstalk. The Penn State technology could provide an alternative to glass fiber optics cables in computer datacenters where distances between systems are not too big. In other words, it would be possible to interconnect servers inside a building at speeds similar to the ones provided by more expensive fiber optic cabling.

Sweden - Elektrokoppar reduces copper wirerod production due to high copper prices - 0 views

  •
Elektrokoppar said that payment terms with end-users need to be shortened due to record high copper prices. The Swedish copper wirerod producer commented that fabricators cannot act as bankers and have to shorten payment terms by nearly 50% compared to last year. The company decided to reduce production of copper wirerod by 20% from 2010 in order to cut the stock level needed to be financed. The main wirerod mill operations have gone down from four shifts to three. At the current copper price levels, Elektrokoppar decided to cover the north European market than selling to other markets with high freight rates and high financing costs.

China - Copper and copper semis imports fall by 36% m-o-m in February - 0 views

  •
Chinese imports of copper and copper semis contracted by 36% m-o-m to 235,500t in February 2011, according to customs statistics. The figure was also down by 27% from the same period a year ago. It was reported that utilisation rates of copper semis makers declined after the Chinese New Year, and therefore copper consumption fell. In addition, some semis fabricators had built stock before the festive season, which impacted imports in February. On anticipation of surging copper prices, imports were very strong in January and that led to high inventory levels in Shanghai bonded warehouses.

IWCC expects a slow-down in Chinese copper demand growth this year - 0 views

  •
The International Wrought Copper Council (IWCC) expects the growth rate for copper demand in China to fall from a double digit increase in 2010 to 7% this year. The council also said that the short term demand outlook was unclear due to the influence of high copper prices on end-user inventory levels. Furthermore, the IWCC commented that some industry participants see shrinking stock levels at the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) as a sign of increasing Chinese demand, while others believe that it is indicative of China's rising export levels. SHFE stocks contracted to 82,309t, down 54% from a peak level of 177,365t in March.

General Cable's CEO Discusses Q2 2011 Results - 1 views

  • In ROW, our strategy of introducing a broader product range into developing markets helped to offset the impact of lower-than-expected volume across a number of countries. The uneven demand experienced during the second quarter is largely episodic, as the fundamental growth drivers remain solid, and GDP rates for many emerging markets continue to outpace those in the developed world. Sequentially, our second quarter results reflect the impact of stronger demand in Venezuela, Brazil and Zambia. In Venezuela, the company benefited from higher spending on electrical infrastructure as the country works to reinforce a weak power grid. In Brazil, our results reflect the aerial transmission shipments and the introduction of specialty products as the country continues to industrialize while at the same time preparing for the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016. In Zambia, our results reflect the shipment of aerial transmission products as the government invests in expanding its power grid. In addition, we strengthened our market position and product range in Colombia, Peru, Australia, South Africa and Mexico. In Mexico, we recently qualified and supplied our first high-voltage cables. Our market penetration into Mexico continues ahead of expectation, and is supported by a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility with high-voltage capabilities ranging up to 225 kilovolts and a comprehensive line of products for electric utilities and contractors. Overall, our results in ROW continue to demonstrate the non-linear nature of our business in the short-term, as construction, mining and utility products are moved between reporting periods, government appropriations are authorized and infrastructure investment plans are advanced.

Deadliest Ebola outbreak being driven by urbanization - 0 views

  • So what has made this outbreak so big? The overriding factor could be urbanisation. In the past, village outbreaks remained small, unless people went to hospitals. "Population size and high mobility make it hard to do contact tracing," says Peter Walsh at the University of Cambridge. Cities provide more chances to spread the virus, something that may also have enabled the spread of HIV. According to the African Development Bank, the continent has had the world's highest urban growth rate for 20 years, and the proportion of Africans living in cities will rise from 36 per cent to 60 per cent by 2050.

Bell Labs Hits 10 Gbit/s Broadband Over Copper - 0 views

  • Bell Labs is back, recently setting a new world record of 10 gigabit per second over existing copper wires. Why is this important? Because it solves the fiber-to-residence problem. Fiber cables for high-speed Internet services are being laid all throughout the country and world, but at a relatively slow rate due to the "curb-to-residence" problem. Many home owners are reluctant to let their lawns be dug up to lay fiber from the curb to the house, and many Internet providers are reluctant to incur the cost. Now Alcatel-Lucent's Bell Labs (Murray Hill, New Jersey) has a invented a solution -- a method of running 1-to-10 gigabit per second broadband signals from the curb to the residence using the existing copper telephone lines already there.
