2012 demand in China - Luvata - 0 views

  • Luvata has seen a contraction in demand for copper products in China so far in 2012, senior vp and chief procurement officer Bob Kickham told Metal Bulletin on Monday October 8. “We planned for growth but we saw some contraction, and it’s the first year in as many as I can remember where that’s happened,” he said. The outright contraction in sales volumes runs counter to prevailing analysis indicating that China’s end-use demand grew in 2012, albeit at a slower pace than in previous years. China’s apparent usage – not taking into account unreported changes in inventories held by consumers, producers, traders or the State Reserve Bureau – grew by 27% in the six months to July, driven by an 80% increase in net imports, according to the International Copper Study Group (ICSG). But as the ICSG pointed out, anecdotal evidence suggests that bonded stocks in Chinese warehouses have surged during the same period as demand has failed to keep pace with the stronger imports.“I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see that warehouse stocks in China are at the 650,000-700,000-tonne...

  • Rio said earlier this month that it was on track to start commercial production by June. Analysts said a delay, should it materialise, would not trigger a profit warning. Production from the mine is expected to hit 74,000 tones this year, or 1.1 per cent of forecast net profit.

Encore reports lower sales in Q3 - 0 views

  •
US wiring manufacturer Encore Wire released its financial results for Q3 and the nine months ending September 2012. Sales for Q3 were $269.2 million down y-o-y from $319.4 million. The company said lower prices for building wire and the lower copper price contributed to this. Net income for the quarter also fell y-o-y from $13.7 million in Q3 2011 to $5.5 million in Q3 2012. The company's CEO commented that "The third quarter of this year was another fairly steady volume quarter in the midst of this construction industry recession. There are signs of bright spots around the country and talk of some major projects, but for the most part we are still in the trough. Major projects are discussed but then get delayed due to uncertainties surrounding the global economy and the U.S. economy and political environment. The good news is that our volumes are not trending downward."

France - Nexans announces Q1 growth - 0 views

  •
Nexans reported organic revenue growth of 0.6% to €1.75 billion ($2.3 billion) in all activities in the first quarter, down from 13% growth in the previous year. The group reported strong growth for the first quarter 2012 for copper cables in South America and fibre cables and components in Scandinavia and France. The company did not supply a specific figure for the telecom business, which is now grouped in the transmission, distribution and operators division. Nexans said its operating margin at 30th June should be around 3.5% as a result of competition in underground cables and delays in invoicing high voltage products. At the end of March 2012, net debt came to €566 million ($748.1 million) compared with €222 million ($293.4 million) at the end of December 2011. This increase can mainly be attributed to the acquisition of AmerCable, finalised on 29th February for an enterprise value of €211 million ($278.9 million).

Xstrata copper production in H1 down by 3% YoY - 1 views

  • Total mined copper production decreased by 3% in the H1 of 2010 compared to the corresponding period in 2009. Lower production was mainly due to reduced volumes at Mount Isa and Ernest Henry as a result of lower grades and at Antamina, where higher mill throughput and recoveries only partially compensated for lower copper ore grades.

Split personality of superconductor material offers possibilities for quantum computing... - 0 views

  • The new material is a crystal that has been described as being part superconductor and part metal, named a "topological superconductor" by scientists at Princeton University.  When at very low temperatures the crystal’s interior conducts electricity with no resistance as a normal superconductor would.  However the surface is metallic, and therefore has resistance to any current carried.
