Jiangxi Copper H1 Earnings up 32% - 0 views

  •
Higher sulphuric acid prices, up almost 200% on a year ago, to 1500 yuan per tonne, provided a big boost to China's largest integrated copper producer. Revenues contributed by sulphuric acid, a by-product of copper smelting, amounted to 1.66billion yuan in H1, a 521% increase year-on-year. Jiangxi Copper posted H1 net profit of 2.77billion yuan, an increase of 32% on the same period in 2007. The company expects demand for its products to slow in the second half of the year with global economic growth struggling to gain momentum. However, Jiangxi remain confident that copper prices will stay high as a result of, "the shortage of copper concentrates supply around the world and the downgrade of copper concentrates." Factors expected to put pressure on Jiangxi's profit margin over the second half of the year include falling smelter processing fees, as a result of global over-capacity and tight supply of concentrates, and a cut in output of semi-finished products due to China's ongoing power shortages.

Rio Tinto sees profits rise 113% - 0 views

  •
Rio Tinto has announced bumper results for H1 2008, with net earnings up 113% on the same period last year, to a record US$6,914million. Results were boosted by higher sales volumes, particularly iron ore, and the first full 6 months to include Alcan. These gains were offset in part by lower copper product volumes, primarily due to lower grades at Kennecott Utah Copper. "The effect of price movements an all major commodities was to increase earnings by US$2,790 million," said the company, following new record price levels for many of its products in the first half, including copper at 20% higher than a year earlier. The company announced an interim dividend of US68c per share, an increase of 61% on H1 2007, and re-emphasized its commitment to, "increase total 2008 and 2009 dividends by at least 20% in each year".

Murchison has sold its 9.2% stake in Midwest Corp to Sinosteel for $107 million following Sinosteel's takeover of Midwest. Posted: Thursday , 11 Sep 2008 SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australian iron ore prospector Murchison Metals Ltd has sold its 9.2 percent stake in fellow Australian firm Midwest Corp to China's Sinosteel for about A$135 million ($107 million). The move follows Sinosteel's $1.3 billion takeover of Midwest earlier this year, which defeated a plan by Murchison to merge with Midwest. The two Australian firms are neighbours in the as-yet undeveloped Yilgarn iron ore mining region of west Australia. Murchison said in a statement on Thursday the sale of the Midwest shares is in the best interests of the company, especially given significant changes in world financial markets over the past three months. "The cash raised through the sale gives Murchison greater flexibility in relation to both developing existing projects and in pursuing fresh opportunities," Murchison Executive Chairman Paul Kopejtka said in the statement.

Japan Produces Less Copper Tube This Year - 0 views

It is believed that a cash crunch is reducing orders in the Chinese power sector, which accounts for 60% of the country's copper demand. Analysts predicted strong copper demand in H1 as the country was eager to repair the damages to power networks caused by the heavy snow in the early part of the year. However, repairs have so far mainly been made to aluminium and fibre-optic cables. Cash flow problems at copper rod and wire plants have occurred following the government's tight credit policy and high copper prices. Some 30% of copper wirerod production capacity is being reported idle. The cash shortages have also delayed copper buying from active copper fabricators, further dampening consumption of the metal. China, a net importer of copper, exported 31,000 tonnes of refined copper in April, up 227% year-on-year, with the possibility that the country might have been re-exporting the metal since late February. China's General Administration of Customs reported that 14,000 tonnes were exported to South Korea, six times that from the same period last year. This perhaps confirms that traders were re-exporting copper it has imported to LME-approved warehouses to take advantage of the discount between Shanghai and LME copper prices.

By the end of 2009 it will begin manufacturing low and medium voltage cables for buildings and energy infrastructure as well as special cables for the oil and gas industry. This JV will generate sales of $150m per year by 2010 at current copper prices. Finally, Nexans confirmed that it has completed the pre-announced sale of its copper telecom cable plant at Santander in Spain to the British company B3 Cable Solutions for €17m. Nexans releases H2 2008 Results - 0 views

  •
Cable maker Nexans announced its H1 2008 financial statements on 24th July. The company reported H1 sales dropped by 6.28% year-on-year to €3,554M (US$5,572M) as a result of deliberate reduction of the external sales in the electrical wires business. Operating margin was €220M (US$345M), which is an increase of 18% from same period last year. H1 net income was €119M (US$187M), which was comparatively more stable than the other sectors due to less exposure to tax rate change. Nexans believes that the increased uncertainty in the economic environment had not affected its profitability as operating margin increased to its target amount. It also announced that it has abandoned the plan to sale its automotive cable harnesses business.

Environmental Economics: All I want to do is make teaching environmental economics easi... - 0 views

  • Desalination uses a lot of electricity, which makes desalinated water expensive and means that the process damages the environment. Furthermore, the article notes that the Metropolitan Water Agency, a Southern California water authority, will subsidize the consumption of desalinated water. The environmental issues and subsidizes lead to good questions about whether government authorities should subsidize the production of a commodity that damages the environment.
