Xstrata Copper: Collahuasi commences prefeasibility study into major expansion project - 0 views

  • The project envisages the construction of one or two new grinding lines, allowing Collahuasi to process between 270,000 and 380,000 tonnes of ore a day. This increase in production from the current annual average of approximately 500,000 tonnes of copper to 800,000 tonnes with a single line expansion, and to more than one million tonnes with both lines, would begin from the project’s anticipated commissioning in 2017.

USA - Copper and Brass Servicenter shipments flattened in May; mill lead times forecast... - 0 views

  •
The Copper and Brass Servicenter Association reported that shipments of brass mill products amounted to 20.24Mlbs in May 2011, up by 0.4% on the previous month and down 11.3% y-o-y. This comes after a 13% fall in April from 25Mlbs in March, which was the peak that service centers experienced in Q1. Industry sources attributed the flattening in shipment levels in May to a decline in general consumer activity, also indicated by the Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing index falling from 60.4 to 53.5. In addition, it was reported that US brass mills are expecting lead times to narrow or flatten during Q3. Lead times are currently two to five weeks, having previously lengthened in early Q2. Lead times tend to be longer when consumer and service center demand is weak.

Deep-sea mud in the Pacific Ocean as a potential resource for rare-earth elements - 0 views

  • We show that deep-sea mud contains high concentrations of rare-earth elements and yttrium at numerous sites throughout the eastern South and central North Pacific. We estimate that an area of just one square kilometre, surrounding one of the sampling sites, could provide one-fifth of the current annual world consumption of these elements.

USA - CommScope to supply Groundsmart™ Copper Clad Steel grounding wire to B... - 0 views

  •
CommScope, Inc. will supply the Bishop Hill Wind Farm in Henry County, Illinois with its GroundSmart(TM) Copper Clad Steel solution, an alternative to solid and stranded copper that is increasingly in demand by utilities for its cost-efficiency and anti-theft characteristics. CommScope will provide 1.7 million feet of GroundSmart copper clad steel grounding wire to the project this year--the largest GroundSmart application to date. The Bishop Hills Wind Farm will include approximately 130 wind turbines. Developers of Bishop Hill said that they see GroundSmart as a simple solution to reducing projects costs without compromising the system's integrity. Copper clad steel is specifically designed to disperse fault currents and lightning strikes at a lower total cost of ownership compared to pure copper.

Solar panel subsidy to be slashed - 0 views

  • That would mean a fall from the current level of up to 43p per kilowatt hour generated, to as little as 9p per kWh – a move which the industry claims would be devastating. If the government follows past precedent, any change would not affect homeowners with existing solar panels.

Aluminum Could Be New King of Industrial Metals - 0 views

  • Nexans (NEX.PA), a French company that makes electrical wiring and cables, says that the switch from copper to aluminum is inevitable. Its corporate purchasing director, Christophe Allain, told the CRU Group’s World Copper Conference in April that “the switch will come; the big question is when and what size it will be.” As Nexans told the Financial Times, one reason is that aluminum cables currently cost about 40% less than copper ones – even though more insulation is required for aluminum cabling. For countries in the developing world that are still building out a power grid, that price difference is a huge deal.

Innovations in Industrial Waste Heat Management - 1 views

  • Industrial waste heat management has seen rising levels of importance due to volatile fuel prices and also regulations to maximize energy conservation. As such, industries have started recognizing the necessity and advantages of industrial waste heat management. Till recent past much importance was being paid to recovering waste heat and reusing it as thermal energy. But now the focus is on new methods of waste heat recovery which convert even low grade waste heat into other forms of energy with increased feasibility. Low grade waste heat recovery, which has slowly been gaining prominence is expected to be a major driver for research in the future. This research service report presents analysis on current technology capability and expected future trends in technology adoption for industrial waste heat management. Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to evaluate the application potential in the five most energy intensive industries – Cement, Oil and Gas, Steel, Pulp and Paper, and Glass to identify the industry with greatest future application potential. Based on inputs from technology developers and from the predicted market scenario, an evaluation was done.
