Nexans, one of the worldwide leaders in the cable industry and expert in LAN cabling solutions, has launched two revolutionary concepts in copper cabling technology with its new LANmark-6A and -7A products.

In a December report, Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney predicted that by the end of 2011, 70% of all new worldwide voice and data client-to-LAN connections will be wireless. The firm also estimated that $100 billion will be wasted over the coming five years following outdated network design principles.

Nexans has announced that construction of its first high voltage power cable manufacturing plant in North America has begun. The plant is sited in Berkeley County, Charleston, S Carolina. Frederic Michelland, Nexans Senior Corporate Executive Vice President said, "The establishment of our first high voltage cable manufacturing plant in North America is a key strategic development for Nexans. It will enable us to capitalize on the ever growing demand for high quality high voltage cables designed and manufactured to meet the specific needs of the major power transmission infrastructure projects planned in North America and worldwide in the coming years." The plant is to begin operations in 2014 and has an initial investment of US$85M. The first phase of the facility will focus on the manufacture of underground power cables up to extra high voltage (EHV) levels of 500 kV and the company hopes it will reinforce Nexans' current product range in North America, adding to the existing medium voltage, low voltage, overhead transmission, industrial, building wire, electrical wire and LAN portfolios.

Nexans announced sales of EUR1.7B (US$2.4B) in Q3 2011, up 3.9% y-o-y. Sales increased by 6.8% y-o-y in the first three quarters of the year. In the energy sector, the company's sales increased by 2.8% in energy infrastructure, 9.6% in industry, and 7.4% in building. With regards to the telecoms sector, Q3 sales increased by 6.0% in telecom infrastructure and 2.9% in private networks (LAN). The consumption of copper cables especially accelerated in Europe and South America. Wire sales were down by 13.8% due to Nexans' decision to utilise more of the material in their own downstream production, resulting in less material being available for external sales.
