  • “Knowing how to act virtuously always involves more than rule-following” (DRA, p. 93). The prudent person can judge what must be done in the absence of a rule and can also judge when general norms cannot be applied to particular cases.
  • Flourishing as an independent practical reasoner requires the virtues in a second way, simply because sometimes we need our friends to tell us who we really are.   • Human flourishing requires the virtues in a third way, by making it possible to participate in social and political action. My near-death experience, however, took place not while my cortex was malfunctioning, but while it was simply off.
