Does This Ad Make Me Fat? - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • A team of researchers walked every street in 228 census tracts around Los Angeles and New Orleans and recorded every outdoor ad they saw. Another group surveyed 2,881 residents of the same census tracts by telephone, paying them to report their height, weight and other information. After analyzing this hard-won data, the authors conclude: “For every 10 percent increase in food advertisements, the odds of being obese increased by 5 percent.” That is, areas with more outdoor food ads have a higher proportion of obese people than ones with fewer ads.
  • The problem is that their policy recommendations rest on a crucial but unjustified assumption: that any link between obesity and advertising occurs because more advertising causes higher rates of obesity. But the study at hand showed only an association: people living in areas with more food ads were more likely to be obese than people living in areas with fewer food ads. To be fair, the researchers correctly note that additional steps would be needed to prove that food ads cause obesity. But until those steps are taken, talk of restricting ads is premature. In fact, it is easy to imagine how the causation could run the opposite way (something the article did not mention): If food vendors believe obese people are more likely than non-obese people to buy their products, they will place more ads in areas where obese people already live. Suppose we counted ads for fitness-oriented products like bicycles and bottled water, and found more of those ads in places with less obesity. Would it then be wise anti-obesity policy to subsidize such ads? Or would the smarter conclusion be that the fitness companies suspect that the obese are less likely than the fit to buy their products?

Maybe it’s because everything in life has been reduced to a computer screen and a smart phone?Maybe it’s because we’ve created an environment where we see labor as something of a lower position in life? Maybe it’s just the nature of the cycle of students we hire from year to year?

It is interesting to think that some think our generation likes to find the easier way to get things, and that is valued because that makes them "smarter," which also could be a type of heuristic in short cutting work.

    This article is very inspiring. This is an example of how education can get someone to a higher and better place. Education is something that's worth investing. I really like one thing that she said: "I want to leave a legacy for my kids when I leave this earth, and living paycheck to paycheck is not going to get it." Although for many of us here, attending to college is a must-to-do thing, for many other people, attending colleges a dream, an ultimate goal. Many of us go to college and just waste another four years there. But for Ms. Hopewell, the college education polished her and made her a complete new person. I just think it's interesting that why we get completely different outcomes from having college education?  I think it's because we never put much effort in getting a college education as Ms. Hopewell did, so the force effect doesn't give us the pride of commitment. --Sissi (1/23/2017)

    This article explains how protest work. I have always been thinking that protests are all about the number of people we can gather. The larger the population, the more powerful the protests are. However, I have never looked deep into the mechanism behind protests. I really like the analogy made in the article. The main purpose of a protest should be showing the potential strength the public have over the issues. If we don't do anything after the gathering, then the protest won't be power enough to influence the policy of the government because the government will know that we are actually not that firm on our position. The analogy I come up with is that our attendance can't reflect how much we learn in school. Attending the school doesn't ensure that we are taking away knowledge from school. Facebook has touted this plan as one which provides a better user experience and has noted the ability for publishers to create ads on the platform as well.
  • The benefit to Facebook is obvious: It gets to keep people inside its house. They don’t have to leave for even a second. The publisher essentially has to accept this reality, sigh about the gradual death of websites and hope that everything works out on the financial side.
