Mindful Practices brings a student-centered and culturally relevant approach to yoga and wellness education. The organization features educators, social workers, dancers and administrators who display versatility in their approach to engaging teachers, students and communities from all walks of life. Mindful Practices offers extensive and engaging programming for school districts, such as recess, after school and social-emotional learning programs, and professional development workshops.
At first thought, teaching yoga to a high-risk school population might seem as incongruous as recruiting the chess team for Sumo wrestling. Pre-K students practice their yoga poses. And while neither may sound like a good match, the principal of Jefferson Elementary School in Berwyn, Illinois, is crediting a school-wide yoga program for improving school climate, test scores and student behavior.

Non-traditional physical education games are beginning to lead to more active lifestyles and lifetime activities for students at William Fleming High School in Roanoke, VA. Students are now being exposed to activities such as fishing, cycling, ping pong, yoga, golf bowling and badminton in their high school physical education class.
Columbia Elementary's school motto is "Together We Can!" Together principal Lori Musser and staff members have adopted initiatives such as after-school clubs and intensive reading instruction to help students achieve. Included: Learn about Columbia's "Great Expectations" for students! "Our mission is clear at Columbia Elementary School," says principal Lori Musser.
The role of counselors in schools is expanding from just attending to individual students to leading discussions and activities for groups of students that can help improve school performance and behavior.
