As a reading and writing teacher, I have always wished for a magic potion to give to my students that would immediately illuminate the power and necessity of growing as a reader on their lives. The closest I have come to that magic potion are the words of Frederick Douglass from his powerful Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass.

Yesterday, my youngest son wrote a two-sides handwritten letter to Kanye West. He would not let me read it, other than with a quick glance, and then he asked me to help with the formatting of the envelope (I guess he was never really taught that in school or at home).

Researchers from the University of California, Davis and Yale University have found that addressing dyslexia as soon as possible is crucial to closing the achievement gap between dyslexic and typical readers. According to the report published in this month's The Journal of Pediatrics, "Achievement Gap in Reading Is Present as Early as First Grade and Persists Through Adolescence," dyslexia affects 17%-21% of school-age population.

As teachers, we know the value of hands-on exploration with math manipulatives in school. We can extend the sense of discovery and empowerment into our students homes by helping them assemble math toolboxes to be enjoyed by the whole family.

Two veteran educators from Fairfax County, V.A. are in the process of writing a book using anecdotal data from their experiences on how they believe the introduction of smart phones has severely decreased critical thinking and engaged learning in their respective classrooms. Joe Clement and Matt Miles "say the free periods that are part of their school schedule have deteriorated from lively talk among students and teachers to silent screen reading, each student in a little world," according to The Washington Post.

Making Collaboration Work in Your Building Many studies tout the benefits bestowed upon schools that encourage and facilitate teacher collaboration. However, it's not always the easiest practice to put into place. It can require both time and energy that many educators feel they just don't have to spare.
