This is a great site for parents and educators looking for ways to teach students about digital citizenship. There are real-life stories about teens who made mistakes and posted inappropriate pictures on social media and paid the price. There are lesson plans, training programs, presentations and student projects on their page for educators.

This is a great tool that helps students create properly formatted citations in MLA, APA, Chicago, and more. This tool makes creating citations fast and painless. While I know this is a shortcut and it is important for students to learn the format independently, it makes the process less intimidating for seventh graders, and my hope is that they will be more likely to include citations when making them is not perceived as too burdensome.

    Formative

Formative is an tool similar to Socrative that allows teachers and students to create and share formative assessments. Formative can be used to create Do Now activities, exit tickets, "show your work" assessments--particularly helpful to math teachers since students can write or draw on their screens to show their work. Formative also allows students to type in short answers, or upload images, and other methods to demonstrate their learning. Finally, Formative also allows teachers to see student responses live as they are inputted on her own screen.

While we have heard about Newsela before, I'm going to give it another plug here. At Newsela, students can find news articles that come from many different respectable and reliable sources such as The New York Times, The Guardian, Washington Post, and many others. By reading extensively from such reliable sources, students can learn to recognize high-quality information. Students can also learn to cross-reference information by finding articles on the same topic across different sources and comparing it for quality and accuracy. To help students with this text sets on numerous topics are available. Text sets also make it possible for students to synthesize learning across from different sources. Additionally, because some of these sources (The Guardian, for example) are non-US-based publications, students are given multiple cultural perspectives which can encourage them to look at a topic from multiple points of view. I have used Newsela articles as topics for discussion, lessons on informational writing and text structures, and for research purposes.
Another source I would like to mention is Commonlit (https://www.commonlit.org/). Commonlit is an excellent resource for grade-level appropriate readings in many different genres. What I like about this site is the additional resources it offers over and above the texts and text-generated comprehension and discussion questions it provides. Many of the texts provided whether it is a poem, short story, speech, memoir, or informational article include paired texts on related topics, related media, as well as teacher and parent guides. For instance, the poem Turn, Turn, My Wheel by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, is accompanied by a video on about the making of pottery and the use of the pottery wheel, while the paired texts explore the life of Longfellow and the juxtaposition of rigid scientific principles (such as the rotation of the planets) and the unpredictability of life and human fate. I particularly like the way fiction and nonfiction are often paired and how unexpected the pairings sometimes seem at first. I think this is important for kids so that they can start to see how inter-connected of our world.

    Socrative
Socrative is an interactive app that allows users to generate quizzes. For teachers, it is helpful because it allows us to collate and track data related to student learning. It is similar to Kahoot! in its use of timed quizzes that students compete with each other to complete and for that reason has a lot of appeal. For the teacher it has appeal because it can be used to create quick question entrance and exit tickets and quizzes that can be multiple choice, true/false, or short answer. Data is tracked and so can easily be used to form instruction or to assess summative learning. It can also be used as a study tool in advance of traditional assessments.

Bloomz is a communication tool that allows teachers to connect with parents. With it, teachers can share class updates, photos, and videos, manage a class calendar, send reminders, arrange parent-teacher conferences, and manage classroom volunteers, share student behavior reports, and maintain two-way conversations with parents. You can use as many of the features as you like--for instance, I wouldn't really have use of a conference-scheduling feature because my district uses another service for that, but I could see myself using a service like this to send reminders and share class photos and videos of activities. Even though their students are older, I think parents of middle-school-age children would enjoy seeing photos and videos of classroom activities. I can even see the behavior management tool as being useful for students who have behavioral issues but do have SPED services and official behavior plans. I have not used this tool myself but would consider trying it because it does look interesting.

I use Google Classroom extensively in my class. It is great for keeping student work organized and easy to find and makes grading much quicker. It allows for teachers to post assignments, assessments, discussion questions. Classroom also allows for teachers and students to share content. Students can post messages and comment on each other's post, allowing for collaboration. Classroom also can be used with other Google tools such as docs, slides, and forms. I rely on this tool every year.
