Francisco's Journal » On Being a Latino Writer - 0 views

  • I don’t feel that I should or that I am only able to write or that I am somehow for the sake of publication, more inclined to write about “Latino issues.” Latino issues are what? The alienation and disenfranchisement of immigrants; stories that describe the food we eat and the fiestas we celebrate? I think that if I want to be a good Latino writer I have to be a good writer first. My interest is the human soul and the human condition. My main characters will be Latino but they haven’t always been poor people struggling to survive across the border. Some of them have been successful individuals who like many other successful individuals have come to realize that success is not all it is cracked up to be. Whatever good I can achieve for the social problems that affect Latinos will come as a result of being a good writer - someone who portrays Latino characters as believable human beings. To recognize ourselves in the soul of another - isnt’t that a good to be valued? And so yes, I am a Latino writer although I don’t see myself as one.

This Day In History - 0 views

  •
I found this cool site online. It shows you what happened in histoy on any given day of the year. I think that this would interest students and you could make an assignment for each student to find out what had happened each day/week etc and then compare it to what is going on now.

Some students may be more comfortable using computers. They could peer review in Google Docs or even learn how to do that in Microsoft Word. I feel like students are becoming more efficient on computers and at times are more willing to work on computers.
  • it isn't so much what technology can do for classroom instruction; what is central is what it can do for the learner as a citizen of the digital age.
  • English language learners who, without the requisite experiences and opportunities to engage with technologies, may turn out to be the least empowered when it comes to gathering, analyzing, and synthesizing digitized information."

The Benefit and Danger of Education Technology | Edudemic - 0 views

  • What many people don’t understand however is that it also threatens the uniquely American ideals of democracy and equality.

I think it's going a bit far to say this.
  • When classrooms adopt iPads or other tablets in lower grades amongst younger students, the possibility that those students will be left behind in terms of the greater society decreases dramatically
  • If low-income students are unlucky enough to attend schools which can’t fund technology purchases, the chance that they’ll find a way out of a low income life becomes less likely.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • If a student graduates high school without at least a rudimentary and working knowledge of new technologies, their future starts looking a lot less bright.
  • But increasingly, even menial entry level jobs require much more computer literacy than what some disadvantaged students are getting in schools.

About Course Hero - 0 views

This is an interesting website. I could see it being a valuable resource for university students, but also a way of cheating. It connects to your Facebook and you can upload class notes and materials to share with other students. What do you think? Would you encourage your students to use this? What would you do to make sure it wasn't used for cheating?
