PARIS (AP) - Tens of thousands of French teachers and their supporters took to the streets Tuesday for a national strike and protests over education job cuts under President Nicolas Sarkozy's government. As children nationwide packed into a shrinking number of classes because their teachers were out, Sarkozy insisted that his first responsibility was to private-sector workers and employers facing international competition at a time of economic woe, not state employees.

This year's Because I Am A Girl report launched by Plan International revealed that 65 per cent of participants from Rwanda and India agreed that a woman should tolerate violence in order to keep her family intact. With the theme What About Boys?, the report further found out that another 43 per cent agreed with the statement that there were times when a woman deserved to be beaten.

The All India Disaster Mitigation Institute (AIDMI), Ahmedabad, India, is a community-based action research and action advocacy organisation which has been working towards bridging the gap between policy, practice and research in disaster management since 1995. AIDMI's mission is to reduce the vulnerability of poor communities by increasing mitigation efforts, through learning and action, to ensure water, habitat, food, work and human security. The organisation operates locally but also maintains an active international presence.

The joint INEE-GIZ Pan-African Knowledge Hub, established in March 2012, focuses on international funding for education. The Knowledge Hub is part of the "German BACKUP Initiative -- Education in Africa" (or BACKUP Education), a programme of GIZ ("Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH"), and is implemented by the Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE). The Knowledge Hub is based out of Nairobi, Kenya, with coverage of the entire Africa region. It is managed by a Coordinator and Deputy Coordinator who are part of the INEE Secretariat.

Gary R. Plaford's Bullying and the Brain: Using Cognitive and Emotional Intelligence to Help Kids Cope is aimed at addressing such questions.  "Numerous books have been written about bullying, but most of them deal only with external intervention-those that suggest teaching students more appropriate social skills," asserts the back cover of Plaford's book.  This summary goes on to list important expansions that this work targets including: "internal interventions"; strategies for "monitoring and controlling bullying behaviors"; the "latest research on the brain and emotional intelligence"; new insights into managing "emotional triggers"; as well as cultivating "connections and an outward focus" among students (Plaford, 2006, back cover).

The book "Open Educational Resources in Brazil: State-of-the-Art, Challenges and Prospects for Development and Innovation"(author - Andreia Inamorato dos Santos)  has been out of print. This is the second IITE publication within the series of case studies summarizing best practices of OER development in non-English-speaking countries. The study contains an overview of the Brazilian educational landscape, national educational policy and the strategies of ICT use in education. The author describes existing open digital content repositories with due emphasis on the copyright situation and considers several examples of successful international OER projects which involved Brazilian partners. The book is destined for those who study OER initiatives and projects on a national scale as well as promotion of OER movement worldwide. 

Education minister Hirofumi Hirano plans to set up an internal team to help schools and boards of education curb bullying.

To mark International Women's Day, UNESCO and the UIS have jointly released the World Atlas of Gender Equality in Education, which includes over 120 maps, charts and tables featuring a wide range of sex-disaggregated indicators.   The vivid presentation of information and analysis calls attention to persistent gender disparities and the need for greater focus on girls' education as a human right.   The atlas illustrates the educational pathways of girls and boys and the changes in gender disparities over time. It hones in on the gender impact of critical factors such as national wealth, geographic location, investment in education, and fields of study.     The data show that: Although access to education remains a challenge in many countries, girls enrolled in primary school tend to outperform boys. Dropout rates are higher for boys than girls in 63% of countries with data. Countries with high proportions of girls enrolled in secondary education have more women teaching primary education than men. Women are the majority of tertiary students in two-thirds of countries with available data. However, men continue to dominate the highest levels of study, accounting for 56% of PhD graduates and 71% of researchers.

The objectives of this report are to raise awareness about the causes and consequences of violence faced by children in and around schools, to share good practices and strategies on how to prevent and address it, and to discuss the importance of cooperation at local, national, regional and international levels.

In the run-up to 2015 and beyond, the global education community must work together to improve learning and propose practical actions to deliver and measure progress. In response, UNESCO through its Institute for Statistics (UIS) and the Center for Universal Education (CUE) at the Brookings Institution have co-convened the Learning Metrics Task Force (LMTF). The project's main objective is to shift the focus of global education debates from access to access plus learning. Based on input from technical working groups and global consultations, the task force will make recommendations to help countries and international organizations measure and improve learning outcomes for children and youth worldwide.

Barcelona Declaration of the Human Right to Peace adopted on June 2, 2010 will be submitted to International Congress in December as part of the World Social Forum organized to celebrate the end the UN Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence. At this time nations from around the world will discuss and adopt the final text of the Declaration to submit to the UN.
