Instructional Strategies - 14 views

Zoom-In Inquiry is often an introduction portion of a lesson. During this activity, students uncover a primary source image piece by piece in order to understand a big idea or theme related to curriculum standards. An investigative question starts the exploration and guiding questions focused on observation, interpretation, and evaluation follow as pieces of the image are revealed one at a time. Students use evidence and subject specific vocabulary to support their hypotheses. Students reflect on their understanding of the primary source and its relationship to "the big picture" or a large scale understanding that is overarching and essential to the subject. Finally, other related primary sources are presented that ask students to apply knowledge and understanding from the Zoom-In Inquiry to a new source or problem.

"The Purpose of Education" - MLK, 1947 - 5 views

  • Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction. The function of education, therefore, is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically.
  • The complete education gives one not only power of concentration, but worthy objectives upon which to concentrate.
  •
This 1947 college newspaper essay from Martin Luther King is the source for his oft-cited quotations on the function of education as it relates to critical thinking. With the essay he also notes the import of character and the transmission of culture.

An Analysis of the PIRLS (2006) Data: Can The School Library Reduce the Effect of Pover... - 6 views

  •
It has been firmly established that more reading leads to better reading (and writing, spelling, vocabulary and grammar), and that more access to books results in more reading (Krashen, 2004). It is thus reasonable to hypothesize that more access to books is related to better reading. This prediction has been confirmed by a number of studies showing a positive relationship between library quality and reading achievement (McQuillan, 1998; Lance, 2004, and studies reviewed in Krashen, 2004).

What will the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement mean for copyright? | Inside Story - 9 views

  •
"The positions of the Australian negotiators have been mixed. In relation to some provisions they are acting in accordance with domestic developments, including the recommendations of the IT pricing report on parallel importation and the abusive assertion of IP rights; on other issues, such as the extension of the term of copyright and the omission of "fair use," their position is not so strong. On these matters, and on the proposed cooperation between ISPs and copyright holders - which is controversial domestically and represents a significant change - the treaty terms ought to be open to public debate. *"
