I then delved into reading many articles and books about Makerspaces. I'm a teacher librarian in a junior girls' school and I saw how within our library an area could be created to encourage creativity using the numerous amount of technology we have in our library.

Are there computers in the classroom? Does it matter? Students, Computers and Learning: Making the Connection examines how students' access to and use of information and communication technology (ICT) devices has evolved in recent years, and explores how education systems and schools are integrating ICT into students' learning experiences. Based on results from PISA 2012, the report discusses differences in access to and use of ICT - what are collectively known as the "digital divide" - that are related to students' socio-economic status, gender, geographic location, and the school a child attends. The report highlights the importance of bolstering students' ability to navigate through digital texts. It also examines the relationship among computer access in schools, computer use in classrooms, and performance in the PISA assessment. As the report makes clear, all students first need to be equipped with basic literacy and numeracy skills so that they can participate fully in the hyper-connected, digitised societies of the 21st century.

EY report on megatrends - large, transformative global forces that define the future by having a far-reaching impact on business, economies, industries, societies and individuals. We live in a world in constant motion. Goods, capital and labor are traveling globally at a faster pace than ever and moving in novel patterns. Technological innovation, including digital, is rewriting every industry and the way in which human beings manage their lives. In this world, the ever-increasing acceleration of change is one of the few constants.

I printed this entire report out for my husband to read because I thought it was so relevant to everything and everyone today. I'm happy to see it here, Jennie, because I referenced it in my assignment too :-)

Updated February 18, 2017 Recently, I have heard from many teacher librarian friends around the country (and world) that are encountering the effects of personnel and/ or budget cuts. This deeply saddens me when I learn of library services being cut back in any way.

" As a school librarian, I feel it is our responsibility to look into these programs and practices. Not only should we research these practices, but as school leaders, we should offer training on these practices to our teachers. Librarian Scott McGinley commented, "School librarians need to be proactive in providing professional development to staff, whether it be an informal grade level team meeting or something school-wide" (2021)."

Students are the future, but what's the future for students? To arm them with the relevant, timeless skills for our rapidly changing world, we need to revolutionize what it means to learn. Education innovators like Dr. Sugata Mitra, visiting professor at MIT; Sal Khan, founder of Khan Academy; and Dr. Catherine Lucey, Vice Dean of Education at UCSF, are redefining how we engage young minds for a creatively and technologically-advanced future. Which of these educators holds the key for unlocking the learning potential inside every student?

I found this interesting in how many of the presenters shared Sir Ken Robinson's views on education. That as it began out of the Industrial Revolution, it's now time to adapt to the skills that our current students need. Dr Mitra's list of what students really need: Reading Comprehension skills and the ability to search and retrieve from the internet I found particularly relevant to my role as a teacher librarian.

Hi, just read an article in The Sunday Age "Digital natives or just digital labourers". 15/05/16. It is worth taking a look at. Some young people seem to be feeling the need to "switch off". I note that in my reading for Assignment 2 in FYI, vol 20 Number 1, Summer 2016 "Developoing a reading culture" one of the opportunities provided by libraries is "the chance to be still, to be quiet and to be absorbed in another story and another world." This is not a Luddite statement about the evils of social media, rather an acknowledgement that somehow school libraries need to accommodate and be so much to so many students. If we have makerspaces, games and gaming how can we also provide the space for quiet reflection, reading and private study? This challenge seems to consume much of our thinking in our library at the moment. Our library has three full time staff, and no separate, larger rooms. If we divide the space into rooms, then we limit its flexibility. I think this is called "being between a rock and a hard place"

Social media-networked digital media such as Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and wikis-enable people to socialize, organize, learn, play, and engage in commerce. The part that makes social media social is that technical skills need to be exercised in concert with others: encoding, decoding, and community.
