Do you think this will help people come out of the closet if their school is as welcoming as this school? Do you think Tam could do this?

I feel that this day of age our communities are more open about this specific topic, so i believe schools can make a point on supporting the gay community. Especially in High School, students that aren't sure of their sexuality should feel comfortable in their society on whatever they decide on. Many argue that gay people are born that way, but even so why not create an environment where their decision wont be swayed or judged heavily. Tam is already making a big effort to opening up our community to these ideas through the GSA club, so i feel positive feelings would come out of it.

From what I've seen, Tam is already welcoming and accepting of students who are gay or bisexual. The GSA is a prime example of that. Giving students an environment where they will be accepted no matter what their sexuality would take away the fear and negative reactions that so often accompany coming out of the closet. I could easily see Tam students and staff being supportive and accepting if this and other things like it happened at Tam.

I found that story really inspiring and I think it says a lot about our generation becoming more accepting of people who are gay or bisexual. I definitely think that something like this happening could be in Tam's future. I agree with Maddie that Tam is welcoming and accepting of students not only who are a part of the LGBTQ community, but also of people with a variety of different backgrounds, ethnicities, and personalities. I feel Tam in general is a place that people can be themselves without feeling judged and that students are supportive of people no matter what their sexuality is or where they come from.

I agree with haley. I think that this is very cool and that this could really change some schools and help the gay and lesbian community to become more comfortable at school. I think that tam has already taken some steps in the process to become a open school with these kinds of things but there is definitely room to growing. We do have our LGBTQ club at Tam where people can express their sexuality. I think that if Tam could do something like this it would be very cool and make everybody feel more open and welcomed to be who they are.

I also agree that this is a very hopeful story. It definitely shows immense support for the couple, and at the same time I think it also opens everyones eyes. I know that in our community many people know and support someone that has come out, but in other areas people are very harsh and unwelcoming towards gay or lesbian people. I think if this is done at Tam it would be a great way to create an even more supportive environment, and hopefully make every person feel comfortable being themselves. Even if this isn't done specifically at Tam, I think it was enough of an impact just being done at this high school and to have the article be spread around. It could encourage kids to try to make their school just as supportive.

I think this is an adorable story, and shows a lot of progress. I recently watched a documentary on the Stonewall riots and it was horrible to see how LGBTQ people were treated in the 1950s and 60s. Being homosexual was considered to be a mental disease or defect in the brain, and the few that had the courage to come out were considered not human and put in a mental clinic to be treated. Things like that still happen sometimes but stories like this give me hope.

I think people have more to think about before they come out other than their school's opinion, but a school will never be this welcoming unless students start coming out in the first place. The action of people coming out will cause school and students to be more welcoming of gay students. At Tam, I think we have a rather welcoming environment for gay students and it can only improve. This school is a great model for other schools and I hope others will follow in its path.

I agree that Tam is already a very accepting school. I think it's a great thing that this couple was able to win the award but the question of should Tam do this is silly. We shouldn't go out of our way to award the cutest couple award to a same-sex couple. It's a definitely a good thought though to make sure we do consider same-sex couples as nominees of the award. For me, It's always nice to see this kind of thing get so much attention because it makes me feel glad that equality for same-sex couples has come so far and especially seeing it in high schools gives me a lot of hope that things will continue to get better in the future until there really is no difference. It's students like these that really inspire me and hopefully many others.

I agree with devon^. If there is a gay couple that is the cutest and they win the vote then that would a great step forawrd for our school, however we shouldnt just hand the "award" to a gay couple just for being gay. This story shows how we as a country are progressing towards a happier, more open place.
