    This is a fact sheet from AOTA which discusses OT's role in community mental health. This is an area in which OTs play an important role as mental health services shift from a a hospital based setting to more community based. It has been shown that OT interventions help to improve outcomes for those living in the community with serious mental illnesses. OT's can help to address the areas of education, work skills, health/wellness, and cognitive remediation and adaption. This document also discusses ways in which OT can help to address community barriers to functioning such as SES, stigma, safety, and housing options.

    As individuals age, communication often times becomes more difficult due to loss of hearing and eye sight. This PDF document provides information in a classroom format, with learning objectives and simple follow-up questions, to help students and clinicians alike to better understand the psychosocial needs of older adults. The document discusses how our views on aging also impact the patient that we are encountering on a daily basis. It is our task to provide the resources needed to these individuals to gain satisfaction and a sense of wellbeing. Lastly, the document provides ideas and information of alternate ways of thinking, communicating, as well as myths both positive and negative to better assist us in our learning process.

    This PDF document was part of a training course provided by Kansas Association of Homes and Services for the Aging. This particular document outlines various psychosocial needs of the elderly, and various strategies health care professionals can utilize to help provide more person-centered care. Psychosocial needs/issues can arise as a result of the many changes that can occur during older adulthood. This article outlines seven changes that frequently occur in older adulthood that can present potential issues when individuals do not adjust to the changes. For instance, family changes occur as parents who used to care for their children are now being cared for by their children. Individuals may face retirement, and no longer have a sense of who they are without a job title. Older adults may experience an awareness of their mortality as loved ones die and their health declines. Individuals may lose their spouse and companion. Fear of loss of independence may set in as persons experience a decline in health and their physical abilities. Poor adjustment to changes in income after retirement can trigger psychosocial issues. Finally, loneliness may occur as children become busy, older adults do not drive, and spouses and friends die. All of these various factors can create psychosocial needs within a person's life. This article does a great job at not only defining why psychosocial issues may be present within this population, but also provides strategies to help older adults find joy in their lives again and help address their psychosocial needs. For instance, the article focuses on building on lifelong interests and offering new activities that an individual can engage in for pleasure.

    This article discusses the various research opportunities available in area of adult stroke victims. Through the last 12 weeks, I have encountered a significant number of patients with CVA at the nursing home. I found the article extremely relevant to current occupational therapy practices due to the nature of treatments regarding CVA's. I think that it is critical for more research to be done, to help OT's better understand the nature of strokes and the best practices to treat them. AOTA developed a table to help researchers, students, and clinicians that summarizes various research opportunities on stroke patients. I believe this can be a helpful tool for OT's looking for innovative ideas and research to help apply to field work.

    I thought this was a great article relating to the psychosocial needs of clients. Working in an SCI unit, a lot of our clients have mobility issues and quite a few of them have service dogs. In reading this article, it discusses how social participation for people with disabilities is an important factor for OT's to consider. This research helps to demonstrate that having a service dog helps clients to increase leisure activities and community participation. It also found that the use of service dogs, allow people to participate more in meaningful occupations.

    I was very excited to talk talk about this article. During my rotation, I have found that my FE uses kinesiotape fairly often with patients, depending on condition and circumstance, obviously. I know in our MOT class/faculty, we definitely had some "doubters" in the effects kinesiotape can have. One of my patients was a lady in her 70's who had a CVA more than 10 years ago, and has since suffered from significant shoulder subluxation. She came in to therapy after trialing botox. When she came to us, she was very discouraged that botox had not helped, and also discouraged because past OT had not helped her at all, and was now dealing with significant pain from subluxation. After research and discovering this article, I discussed with my FE and we agreed that this California Tri-Pull taping method would be appropriate to try with our patient. In short- the patient found that the tape really helped her, and felt like it was the first thing that had provided her a little bit of relief in a long time. -The taping method itself actually is not too complicated, and did not take long to practice and learn before completing on a patient. In short- this article discusses the methodology for taping, as well as research that backs the effectiveness of the taping method. Overall, the study finds some mixed results in effectiveness in terms of reducing subluxation and reducing pain, but overall can be a promising adjunct to the management of the hemiplegic subluxed shoulder
