Reason Therapists Choose Not to Use EBP - 1 views

  •
This blog post, written by a pediatric occupational therapist, highlights the push for occupational therapy practitioners to utilize evidenced based practice interventions. The therapist highlights some of the common reasons individuals choose not to utilize evidenced based interventions in their practice. Some common reasons practitioners choose not to use evidenced based practice include limited access to new research due to an unwillingness to purchase research articles, lack of motivation after a hard day's work, not enough time to interpret new research and draw conclusions to alter one's practice, and unwillingness to alter one's routines/intervention techniques. However, the therapist eloquently highlights the fact that if we want patients and their families to shell out money for co-pays and insurance companies to reimburse us for the services we provide we must be able to prove that the services we provide are effective. Thus, we must utilize interventions that have research to back their effectiveness.

Electrical stimulation and muscle strengthening. - PubMed - NCBI - 0 views

  •
This article is an example of what one would use if searching for evidenced based practice methods. My current fieldwork experience is in a skilled nursing facility and we frequently use the e-stim for strengthening and pain. Therefore for an article on evidence based practice i decided to search for an evidence based article that would prove what we are doing with the e-stim machine is beneficial. The article is a literature review and seeks to gather the evidence for e-stim and muscle strengthening. The results say that theoretically the e-stim is a complimentary tool for muscle strengthening. However, the e-stim still has little evidence for muscle strengthening and does not show that it is any better than traditional strengthening methods.

This article focused on determining the trend of practicing Occupational therapists that utilize research to form their evidence-based practice. The article mentions how this is a vital component to a medically-based profession. To examine this question a two page survey was sent out across the country to occupational therapists across various clinical settings. The results demonstrated that the majority of practitioners have access to the relevant information required for evidenced-based practice, whether through online journals or seminars. Also, the data illustrated the higher rates of accessing information correlated positively with higher academic degrees attained. Barriers found to the implementation of such practice included cost of attending such courses as well as lack of convenience accessing online databases. Ultimately, it seems that lack of time appeared to be the greatest barrier to pursuing and attaining such information. Overall, I feel the results demonstrate the change in culture that is occurring within the profession. However, if this change is to become permanent we as the future of the profession must continue to push this ideal forward and assist the profession into the coming years.

THE EFFICACY OF TAPING FOR ROTATOR CUFF TENDINOPATHY: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW AND... - 0 views

  •
This article is one of the articles I used in a K tape in service for this rotation. I used this article as an example of evidenced based practice for my project. This systematic review focused on the efficacy of taping for pain reduction associated with rotator cuff tendinopathy. The review found 10 articles that met inclusion, exclusion, and quality standards. The review found that k-taping significantly increased pain-free range of motion in shoulder flexion and abduction, however, there is still insufficient evidence to conclusively state that k tape alone or in conjunction with other methods is effective for pain reduction in rotator cuff tendinopathy.

Redefining Professionalism for Occupational Therapy - 1 views

  •
This article discusses redefining professionalism for occupational therapy practitioners. The article also asks the question of whether occupational therapy itself deserves to be considered a profession. This is an interesting read considering that occupational therapy practitioners were encountering this issue only 25+ years ago.

This article discusses the beliefs of those in the profession if occupational therapy deserve to be called a profession? This question has concerned occupational therapy in the last decade of the 80's as evidenced by the frequent discussion of this subject in the literature.
