The aim of this study was to explore the effects of guided imagery relaxation in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) using a randomized controlled design. 26 participants were included in this study. 13 participants were allocated to treatment group in which six practice sessions of guided imagery were conducted. The control group were instructed to take a rest quietly during the six sessions. The study suggested that relaxation training had a positive effect in reducing dyspnea; and there was a learning effect of guided imagery along the four weekly relaxation sessions. The study concluded that further research should be explored in the use of guided imagery with COPD patients.
