Study: Third Grade Reading Predicts Later High School Graduation - Inside School Resear... - 1 views

"A study to be released this morning at the American Educational Research Association convention here in New Orleans presents an even earlier warning sign: A student who can't read on grade level by 3rd grade is four times less likely to graduate by age 19 than a child who does read proficiently by that time. Add poverty to the mix, and a student is 13 times less likely to graduate on time than his or her proficient, wealthier peer."

"Every year, more than 1 million students-that's 7,000 every school day-do not graduate from high school on time. Nationwide, only 69 percent of students earn their high school diplomas. Among minority students, only 56 percent of Hispanic, 54 percent of African American, and 51 percent of American Indian and Alaska Native students in the U.S. graduate with a regular diploma, compared to 77 percent of white students and 81 percent of Asian Americans."

Getting Inside the Outside | Leaving to Learn - 0 views

  •
"To keep students in school and engaged as productive learners through to graduation, schools must provide many experiences in which all students do some of their learning outside school. All students need to leave school-frequently, regularly, and, of course, temporarily-to stay in school and persist in their learning. To accomplish this, schools must take down the walls that separate the learning that students do, and could do, in school from the learning they do, and could do, outside. This site is dedicated to exploring and deepening the learning opportunities that young people can have for learning out in the real world and aligning that learning with significant learning outcomes for which they receive academic and graduation credit."

Video: School of thought in Brockton, Mass. - 0 views

  •
Video from PBS - "In 1998, when Massachusetts first implemented new standardized testing that was required for graduation, administrators at Brockton High School learned that more than 75 percent of their 4,000 students would fail to graduate. But over the last decade a small group of dedicated teachers have changed the way every class is taught. They began a schoolwide literacy program to reinforce literacy skills in every class, including math, science and even gym. The transformation at Brockton has been remarkable: Failure rates for that state test have dropped to 6 percent for English, and the school was featured in a 2009 report on exceptional public high schools by the Achievement Gap Initiative at Harvard University."

"This report examines, from the perspective of young people themselves, the roles that relationships with adults and peers play in decisions about staying in, leaving and returning to high school. Building on previous studies, including last year's Don't Call Them Dropouts, this report offers new insights about how support from adults and peers can help to close the remaining gaps between those who graduate from high school on time and those who don't."

"Can schools as we currently know them ever accomplish the mission we've established for them? This week Richard Elmore, one of the nation's most prominent educational thinkers, emphatically shared his conviction that they cannot.  Speaking at a forum on education reform sponsored by the Aspen Institute, the American Enterprise Institute and the Harvard Graduate School of Education (where Elmore is professor), the father of instructional rounds distinguished himself from other panelists by concluding that schooling as we know it will inevitably fail."

In an intense succession of collaborative brainstorming sessions, we practiced improvisation, collaboration, brainstorming, design and prototyping of new models for learning and schooling. We drew from 4.0 go-to thinking and action standards like Stanford d.school's process for ideation, Dyer, Gregersen & Christensen's blueprint for creative leadership in "The Innovator's DNA", Lemov's "Teach Like a Champion," a cornerstone of the new Relay Graduate School of Education, and Seth Godin's challenge for revolution in schools."

Interactive Biology, by Leslie Samuel - 0 views

"Here's the thing - I have a theory. My theory is that most people who don't like it, don't like it because of the way it was taught to them - A bunch of $100 words by a very intelligent teacher. Now, I'm not trying to bash on teachers because they (we) are important. However, sometimes, it is necessary to break down concepts into little bite-sized chunks. That is what Interactive Biology is all about - Breaking down the concepts in biology so that if a Freshman in High School wants to understand Graduate-level Neurobiology, with enough discipline, she could do so. Technology is AWESOME, and I enjoy using it to enhance my classes. The internet continues to amaze me. It's such a useful tool that can help anyone who wants to learn about any subject. Well, if biology is the subject you want to learn about, this is the site for you."
