"NDPC-SD is committed to providing technical assistance to assist states in building capacity to design/select and implement effective, evidence-based interventions and programs to address dropout among students with disabilities. NDPC-SD employs various strategies to transfer knowledge and to support systems change and capacity building. These include direct consultation in designing state-level initiatives based on state-identified needs, product and document reviews, technical assistance, professional development institutes, and Web-based resources. "

"Supportive relationships with adults at school and in the community can play a buffering role, the study found, increasing the chances that at-risk young people will stay in school - or go back to school after dropping out - despite the challenges they face. Those conclusions are based on a nationwide survey of more than 2,800 young people, nearly half of whom had dropped out at some point, along with focus-group interviews with more than 100 young people in eight cities."

"On April 16th, PBS is going to air the first televised TED event, dubbed TED Talks Education. It'll be filmed a bit before the airing on April 4th in New York City. The first three speakers include Geoffrey Canada of the Harlem Children's Zone, Bill Gates, and Sir Ken Robinson. TED says there will be more speakers (including "dynamic teachers, speakers, and performers") announced soon. The topic of discussion? Curbing the high school dropout crisis."

"Research shows that dropout rates, student achievement, and workforce readiness will improve by integrating student voices in the classroom and in society.   Student Voice was inspired by the lack of student voices in education. The Quaglia Institute for Student Aspirations identifies that the higher the grade level, the less students believe they have a say in educational decision-making and the more students expressed concern in the lack of curiosity and creativity in their current classroom environment. Increasing student engagement in schools has a direct correlation with higher grades and lower drop-out rates."

"To keep students in school and engaged as productive learners through to graduation, schools must provide many experiences in which all students do some of their learning outside school. All students need to leave school-frequently, regularly, and, of course, temporarily-to stay in school and persist in their learning. To accomplish this, schools must take down the walls that separate the learning that students do, and could do, in school from the learning they do, and could do, outside. This site is dedicated to exploring and deepening the learning opportunities that young people can have for learning out in the real world and aligning that learning with significant learning outcomes for which they receive academic and graduation credit."

My son, Derek, did a year of service work with City Year after he graduated and then some additional work with Freedom Schools program - both out of Columbus. Now he continues to help inner city youth. He loves the kids.....he is working with 3rd graders and they call him Mr. Derek!
