Education Leadership: A Bridge to School Reform - 0 views

  •
"Education leadership has been called the "critical "bridge" that can unite the many different school reform approaches in ways that practically nothing else can. This was the central theme of The Wallace Foundation's national education conference held in October 2007, at which more than 400 leaders and experts gathered to share practical lessons and experiences about how states, districts and universities are going about the tough work of ensuring that all schools have well-trained, well-supported leadership. This special post-conference report opens with a commentary by Wallace President M. Christine DeVita on the progress and key lessons emerging from the Foundation's education leadership initiative. Richard L. Colvin, director of the Hechinger Institute on Education and the Media, provides detailed highlights of the gathering. Stanford University Professor Linda Darling-Hammond, a conference keynote speaker, discusses the key elements of effective leadership training. Kati Haycock, president of the Education Trust, another keynote speaker, offers vivid examples of how strong leadership made the critical difference in previously-failing schools and urban districts"

"If we teach our children to think then they will do better on the test and they will do better in life. The conference was a celebration of thinking and brought together many of the leaders in educational thinking including the teams behind 'Habits of Mind', 'Teaching for Understanding' and 'Making Thinking Visible'."

Moving at the Speed of Creativity | Visual Notetaking at ISTE 2013 - 0 views

  •
"I have learned a great deal about visual notetaking the past year as I've been working on my second eBook project, "Mapping Media to the Common Core: Vol I." Canadian educator Giulia Forsythe has been and continues to be inspirational to me. Rachel Smith's 18 minute TEDx talk, "Drawing in Class," has also been a big influence. Since I believe we should all "walk our talk," I resolved before the ISTE 2013 conference to try the suggestions of Giulia and Rachel at some of the conference sessions and create my own visual notes. Here are the results."

Formative and Summative Assessment in the Classroom - 2 views

  •
"Effective Classroom Assessment: Linking Assessment with Instruction Successful middle schools engage students in all aspects of their learning. There are many strategies for accomplishing this. One such strategy is student-led conferences. As a classroom teacher or administrator, how do you ensure that the information shared in a student-led conference provides a balanced picture of the student's strengths and weaknesses? The answer to this is to balance both summative and formative classroom assessment practices and information gathering about student learning. Assessment is a huge topic that encompasses everything from statewide accountability tests to district benchmark or interim tests to everyday classroom tests. 4 In order to grapple with what seems to be an over use of testing, educators should frame their view of testing as assessment and that assessment is information. The more information we have about students, the clearer the picture we have about achievement or where gaps may occur."

Academic Parent-Teacher Teams: Reorganizing Parent-Teacher Conferences Around Data / Br... - 0 views

  •
"Creighton School District is a small urban community in Arizona with approximately 7,200 students, of whom 85% are Hispanic and 90% qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. Children in the district are tested informally on a weekly basis and then formally every quarter with a district-developed standards-based assessment in the areas of reading and math. To help families better understand the results of these tests, educators in the Creighton School District have reorganized the structure of parent-teacher conferences to accommodate the shift to a more focused discussion around data."

School principals and the rhetoric of 'instructional leadership' - 0 views

  •
Yet studies of principal behavior in schools makes clear that spending time in classrooms to observe, monitor, and evaluate classroom lessons do not necessarily lead to better teaching or higher student achievement on standardized tests. Where there is a correlation between principals' influence on teachers and student performance, it occurs when principals create and sustain an academic ethos in the school, organize instruction across the school, and align school lessons to district standards and standardized test items. There is hardly any positive association between principals walking in and out of classrooms a half-dozen times a day and conferring briefly with teaches about those five-minute visits. The reality of daily principal actions conflicts with the theory.

Apps in Education: Apps for Handwritten Notes - 1 views

"Apps for Handwritten Notes How many times have you been in a meeting or a conference and just wanted to jot down an ideas or sketch. You don't want to become totally distracted by typing reams but you do want to record it so it doesn't get lost. The following apps allow you to do just that. You can write with your finger or use a stylus if that is more comfortable. These apps will let you record, organise and then share these musings. Great for your classroom or students as well."

"In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxCLE, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxCLE event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized."
