Cultural, religious barriers: Practitioners canvass indigenous approach to grow Africa ... - 0 views

  • From a larger context, Eunice Maina, the CEO of Bismart Insurance in Kenya, associated the low penetration of insurance in the east African country to the traditional nature of insurance practiced in Kenya.  She asserted that the largest economy in east Africa practices informal insurance resulting in the low penetration of the market.“Kenya practices informal insurance in the form of crowdfunding and that has affected the penetration rate,” she said. However, Maina is of the view that rather than adopting the European pattern, traditional insurance should be developed without having to deviate from the African model. She, therefore, solicited for the use of African perspective in developing insurance in the region as techniques to tackle cultural and religious barriers in the insurance industry.

This article helps in understanding the reason behind the low penetration of the insurance market which is the practice of informal insurance and also shows that Bismart's CEO prefers to afix the problems of the African insurance rather than following the European model.

Ghana's banks may find themselves undercut by MTN's mobile money - 1 views

  • According to the World Bank, Ghana is the fastest-growing mobile-money market in Africa. Mobile operators MTN, AirtelTigo and Vodafone currently lead the industry. Banks are pushing digital banking in Ghana, but with less success, according to a report from Tellimer in September. Banks such as Ecobank, Fidelity, Zenith and Standard Chartered can use Ghana’s improving digital infrastructure to widen inclusion, Tellimer says. But the firms points to downside for banks through possible loss of deposits and lower margins on digital products due to the competition. Mobile money may lead to the “cannibalisation” of some banking products, Tellimer says. “Banks will have to fight for transactions and deposits.”
  • MTN is the dominant player with about 90% of mobile money transactions.
  • Mobile operators MTN, AirtelTigo and Vodafone currently lead the industry.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • It will take other players a “lot of marketing and effort or very innovative strategies” to compete with MTN,
  • A few years ago, Adovor says, he would have had to endure the traffic driving across Accra to pay cash. “Mobile money is facilitating business and that will increase as more and more people use digital platforms,” he says. Backed by a supportive regulatory environment, mobile money has become the preferred payment method for Ghana’s small businesses.
    • samielbaqqali

The mobile payment industry is rapidly rising. In Ghana, MTN is one of the leaders in this market. Banks may seem old-fashioned, however, but they still have the financial resources to embrace the new technology and develop their digital services, so I would like to think that this is something that MTN needs to be cautious about.

  •
MTN clearly gained customers' trust and become the most dominant player in the fastest growing mobile money market in Africa. This has definitely raised the barriers to entry for other competitors or traditional banking in the sector.

Client Registration: The Blind Spot in Agricultural Insurance | Agrilinks - 0 views

  • However, PULA’s research showed that registration was not as simple in practice. Because customers had to go through several steps on their phones, they found the registration process to be cumbersome. More importantly, research showed that customers wanted more than simplicity. Most agents and smallholders hesitated to sign up for the insurance after simply reading about it. And input agents, who are often trusted, face-to-face sources of information, did not make enough of an effort to explain the product. PULA often told agents that, by informing customers that their input purchases were insured, they were likely to increase sales, but this proved to be an inadequate incentive.
  •
I think that simplicity is the key to win customers heart especially when you deal with small scale farmers that are not very comfortable with technology. Pula needs to put more efforts in simplifying its business so everyone can have access to it.
