The Emperor of running has Retired. After not finishing the New York Marathon, Haile Gebrelassie decided it was time to hang up his adidas racing flats. In his tearful press conference, he talked about stepping away from the sport due to letting down his fans. There are rumors that it might be a more serious injury for he did have his knee drained the day before,along with MRI. What does this mean for the sport? Haile ran a sub 60 half at the Great North Run only a few weeks ago faster then any American, how can one believe he is washed up? His career has spanned years, he has held 27 world records and has ten gold medals to his name. He will be surely missed. Talentontwikkeling is een modewoord. In de sport en het bedrijfsleven wordt het te pas en te onpas gebruikt. Op zich niets mis mee - wij doen er zelf ook aan mee binnen de Eiffel Topsportcommunity. Veel mensen vergeten echter dat er een lang traject voorafgaat aan talentontwikkeling. Voordat men het talent herkent, erkent en het vervolgens gaat ontwikkelen, moet hij of zij nog tal van obstakels nemen. De kans dat een talent door externe omstandigheden vroegtijdig afhaakt, is groot.Volgens de Dikke Van Dale is een talent 'iemand met veel aanleg of met een natuurlijke begaafdheid'. Talenten worden dus niet gemaakt, maar geboren.

Een gemiste kans Zondag 5 september 2010 het tweede Nederlandse Kampioenschap 10 km. op de weg in Tilburg gezien. Net zoals in 2009 verbaasde ik me nu weer over de deelnemende Kenianen, Ethiopiërs, Belgen en lopers uit andere landen. En dat terwijl deze wedstrijd het predicaat Nederlands Kampioenschap heeft! Er lopen toch ook geen Nederlanders mee in het KC, EC of BK? In de editie van 2010 had Lornah Kiplagat meer last dan gemak van haar buitenlandse concurrentes, terwijl Koen Raymaekers zo'n beetje vanaf de start alleen heeft gelopen. Voor de loopsters en lopers achter Lornah en Koen was het een uitstekende wedstrijd, waar slechts enkele favorieten ontbreken. Dus om samen naar een snelle tijd te lopen, dat lukte op 5 september in ieder geval niet. De nummers twee en drie en de kandidaten voor de overige top tien plaatsen hadden wel de nodige onderlinge concurrentie, dus dat niveau atleten had zeker geen buitenlandse tegenstand nodig. Despite dropping out of the 2008 Beijing Olympics with a broken foot, Kastor has fought her way back from her injuries to compete at a world class status once again. At 37 years old in the running world that means she's one tough woman to be racing against younger and healthier women. Kastor is an Olympic medalist and American record holder with a contagious positive attitude toward running and life. She gives motivational speeches to young people as well as dedicating time to fundraising for the New York Road Runner's youth division. "I've always taken the philosophy that you have to dream a little in this sport. If you stay in your comfort zone you're not going to do anything special." Take a little of Kastor's advice and see what you can achieve by stepping out of your comfort zone.

Goucher may be a world class athlete but she is also just like every one of us. In a Runner's World article by Bruce Barcott, Goucher admits she struggles with negative thoughts and self doubt that can make or break a race. Working out and training are only half the battle. The other half, possibly the hardest part, is mental. Goucher is working with her coach on mental strength, belief in her abilities, and not comparing herself to others. It seems to be paying off and in 2009 she finished third in the Boston Marathon. Just imagine what she will accomplish once she overcomes her inner demons. That's a lesson we can all learn from.
