Despite dropping out of the 2008 Beijing Olympics with a broken foot, Kastor has fought her way back from her injuries to compete at a world class status once again. At 37 years old in the running world that means she's one tough woman to be racing against younger and healthier women. Kastor is an Olympic medalist and American record holder with a contagious positive attitude toward running and life. She gives motivational speeches to young people as well as dedicating time to fundraising for the New York Road Runner's youth division. "I've always taken the philosophy that you have to dream a little in this sport. If you stay in your comfort zone you're not going to do anything special." Take a little of Kastor's advice and see what you can achieve by stepping out of your comfort zone.

Goucher may be a world class athlete but she is also just like every one of us. In a Runner's World article by Bruce Barcott, Goucher admits she struggles with negative thoughts and self doubt that can make or break a race. Working out and training are only half the battle. The other half, possibly the hardest part, is mental. Goucher is working with her coach on mental strength, belief in her abilities, and not comparing herself to others. It seems to be paying off and in 2009 she finished third in the Boston Marathon. Just imagine what she will accomplish once she overcomes her inner demons. That's a lesson we can all learn from.
