  • So, I started using the internet to learn how to do what I wanted to do – blog, make videos, make podcasts, publish student work, etc. Of course it wasn’t easy, but I wanted to learn it so I did. (That is key – my learning was self-directed.)

  • After asking good questions and doing some reconnaissance on tools and apps that your colleagues love, choose a few. Let yourself dabble with the tools. Become comfortable with their interfaces, and give yourself time to understand their purpose and fit (or lack thereof) for your classroom habits and curriculum. At the same time, allow yourself time to say "no" to other flashy new gadgets and tools while you are exploring.

  • So yes, I let my kids have a presence on the internet – first and last name and everything. And though I’m sure there are risks involved, the benefits for us far outweigh them. Here are some of those benefits:
  • They each have email addresses, but I receive copies of every incoming email. I proofread most of what goes back out as well. Youtube comments have to be approved by me, and I don’t allow youtube likes or dislikes. All comments on their websites also come to me for approval. As neither kid is 13 yet, neither of them have facebook accounts. It’s not a perfect system, but it’s not a perfect world. I say we forge ahead and embrace the positives in a smart, informed manner!

  • For generations, youths have showed they would rather sit around and play than go outside and play. It's not technologies' fault if a kid is lazy ... it comes down to parenting, values and the child's disposition.
  • But, there's something else we need to remember: Our values were created in a different time and in a different place.
  • The current jobs the majority of my friends are working at didn't exist as occupations when I was in high school. Should a child be lugging around five textbooks in a backpack that's causing them spinal disc herniation or does an iPad not only enable them to have a lighter load, but the ability - when used properly - to also create, collaborate and engage more with their peers.
