You should! :) She's a librarian and advocate who's been writing and blogging about the social effects of technology for years. I've been reading her blog librarian.net since 1998. This link is to one her recent talks about the digital divide...its history and what it means now.

Now I see how people on youtube make money...I didn't know they paid per view...makes sense.

I think that this is one of the great benefits of social media. People have a chance to make something of themselves without spending millions of dollars in advertisements. It's not just about celebrity status, but more importantly, people can create businesses or help causes using these cheaper tools.

I've been looking at a lot of articles discussing how social informatics is taught in higher education...this was one of the more interesting applications. Student crimefighters!

Wow! That's definitely an interesting way to engage students. I think it's excellent that they collaborated with another organization to really show the usefulness of social informatics. It could really be taught in conjunction with so many other issues and organizations.

what happens when organized religion and technology intersect? (or maybe not-so organized, i.e. the flying spaghetti monster). the article sites "dating service[s]" based on religion, as well as "virtual pilgrimage." the article is about a conference titled digital religion. came across this article and i think this topic is extremely interesting...might end up using it for my final project.

This is really interesting to me, too! I didn't even know such a concept was developing.

I like this whole (relatively new) blog, written by a graduate student whose academic focus is on social media and traditional news media, and how the this sharing of information affects the media channels and the audience. He's got another post about the digital divide, but I couldn't pass up Mr. Splashy Pants.

I love that example. This is a worry/conversation we have all the time with your clients about loss of control with social media but what a great outcome in this instance.

I like that we pick up a lot of good terms and concepts from such blogs. One of his posts using the term "media convergence." That's a good one to add to the list.

The Time Magazine Techland blog reports on theories behind why France banned mentions of Facebook and Twitter on French TV (unless the companies are being reported on specifically). Following French blogger Benoit Raphael (whose French-language blog is linked to in the article), they argue that "both social networks are so ubiquitious as to essentially count as public space."

This seems to parallel (perhaps even extend?) Sarkozy's recent support for building up intellectual property rights and digital rights management on the Internet. One aspect of the digital divide includes urban-rural connectivity disparity. Jeanine mentions Jessamyn West earlier in diigo, and I thought this woman required at least one more bookmark here (I'm a huge fan of her work, writing, presentations.)! This is a phenomenal resource for demographic analysis of internet and social media use. Please take some time too look through it.

Actually, I was just looking at a summary of a 2009 Pew Internet study that related directly to our discussion of the Wesch videos last week. The study dealt focused on the issue of whether engaging with others over the Internet causes feelings of loneliness and isolation. (Spoiler alert: they concluded that people feel more connected, not lonelier, thanks to technology.)

Looking at the Pew Internet Topics list (http://www.pewinternet.org/Topics.aspx) was also helpful in finding some background reading for my group project and also in identifying some potential areas for my final project.

I came across blip.tv while working on a project for Principles of Searching last fall. The link above, (Social Buzz t.v.) is an example of a program related to our social informatics topic. While the commercial cans be a little annoying and quality of production can vary greatly, I have found some really good videos here. :) How sad that we feel so connected that we can't get through a dinner with face to face interaction without constantly checking our emails, facebook, etc. Sometimes I look at families at dinner and laugh because they all have their ipods and phones out, and they're not even talking to each other.

I find it amazing that people can't get through A MOVIE without taking out their phones to see if anyone emailed, texted or called. Crazy!

"A Netflix law just hit the books. As of July 1 in Tennessee, Netflix password sharing can net you a misdemeanor conviction punishable by a $2,500 fine and/or a year behind bars." Do we just LOL at this? One end of an interesting spectrum of DRM approaches...

Zizi Papacharissi is a professor and head of the communications department at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has written a lot of really interesting stuff on social media and internet culture that she links to on the "research" page of her website. I've come across her stuff before and I think she's pretty cool!

It seems to be that Indiana University is a top school for social informatics research. Any others out there that we should be looking at in particular?

I went on Social-informatics.org which gives a list of study programs around the country and world.

This is a theory about the social relationship between people and technology in the workplace. Sociotechnical theory is about optimal performance both from people and technology at work. I don't really understand how this is any different from the idea of social informatics in the workplace, except that maybe this is a systems approach. Anyway, I just wanted to point this out because the concepts seem similar to me.

I was exploring the journal "First Monday" which was listed in the Google Docs table when I came across this topic of "Obfuscation." Besides just liking the sound of the word, I was fascinated by all the various forms in which digital obfuscation can take place. I thought this article might also be useful for my group project which involves Ethics and Technology. (This is also my first time bookmarking, or using Diigo!)

Interesting! I like the broadened idea of "obfuscation" -- not just by writing prose that is untrue, but the way we organize or provide access to those words can also be obfuscating. Just making something hard enough to find or get to. A crappy taxonomy can be a weapon of deceit!
