A 41-year-old city man is dead and police are following "strong leads" in the investigation, police say. Officers responded to the 900 block of Buren Street in Hopewell for a reported shooting. There, they located Richard Miles Hawthorne, 41, with a gunshot wound to the chest. Hawthorne was declared dead at the scene, according to a statement issued this morning. Hawthorne is a registered sex offender listed in the Virginia State Police registry. He was convicted of attempted rape and abduction for immoral purposes in 1995 in Prince George County, according to records. He had renewed his registration on March 19. Police report they have strong leads in the case and do not believe it was a random act of violence. NEWBURGH - Police have confirmed that a man, wanted for a violent burglary in September, killed himself in October. Rosendo Perez-Villalobos, who was deported from the United States five times was most recently wanted by Newburgh City Police in connection with a September 13 violent burglary, in which he strangled and assaulted his victim and committed burglary. One week later, police released a wanted posted for Perez-Villalobos on charges of strangulation, burglary and rape. On October 1, officers found a man hanging from a tree, the victim of an apparent suicide. After receiving DNA confirmation, city police on Tuesday announced the body was that of Perez-Villalobos. In addition to the Newburgh charges, he had been wanted on an outstanding warrant for sexual misconduct and was a sex offender in New York State. Newburgh Police were assisted in the investigation by the State Police Violent Felony Warrant Squad and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - The 2008 death of a sex offender has been identified as a homicide that took place in the city of Dayton, police announced Wednesday. James Rembowski's remains were found in the 7000 block of Lexington - Salem Road near West Alexandria in July 2008. Sources tell 2 NEWS that police suspect Rembowski may have actually been killed at an address of Huffman Avenue in Dayton. Rembowski was convicted of a sex crime in Florida before moving to Dayton. He was under indictment for failure to register as a sex offender at the time of his death. Investigators are now working with the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office and say they have identified possible suspects.

A woman suspected by police of making up a sexual assault has been fined. A 43-year-old woman from Chippenham alleged she had been sexually assaulted in the town in the early hours of Sunday. Police cordonned off an area beneath the railway arches at the top of High Street, an area well covered by security cameras. The tape was taken down on Sunday afternoon.

UNION COUNTY, AR - An inmate in prison for failure to register as a sex offender was allegedly strangled to death late Friday night. According to reports, inmate Ronald Holland, 44, stopped a guard around 1:00 am on December 8 to report that he'd strangled his cell mate with a bed sheet. Holland reportedly told the guard that he'd strangled his cell mate, identified as Matthew Schiele, 22, around 11:00 pm Friday night and covered his body with a sheet. Schiele was in prison serving a 48-month sentence for failure to register as a sex offender, while Holland was serving out a capital murder life sentence without parole. Arkansas State Police is investigating.

A man who committed suicide on Interstate 95 on March 11 told police during the standoff leading up to his death that he killed Lawrence Lewis of Molunkus Township because the convicted sex offender was molesting children, court documents show. Bruce Neal, aka Bruce King, told Penobscot County Sheriff's Deputy Patty McLaughlin shortly before he shot himself with a .30-30 rifle that he forced Lewis to swallow two bottles of nitroglycerin and one bottle of "psych meds," according to a search warrant affidavit released Wednesday at Lincoln District Court. "King told Deputy McLaughlin that he killed Lawrence Lewis. King said he had reported Lewis for molesting children and no one was doing anything," the affidavit states.

Investigators with the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit have completed their search for evidence at the home of a registered sex offender whose body reportedly was hidden in his Macwahoc Road home by a man who later committed suicide during a standoff on Interstate 95. What evidence was removed from the home of the late Lawrence J. Lewis, 68, is not being released, and the cause of his death is still pending, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Thursday morning. The medical examiner has determined it was a homicide. "I do not expect, at this point, any new information to be released," McCausland said. "This is going to be a lengthy and complicated investigation." Lewis' body was taken to the medical examiner's office in Augusta for an autopsy, which has been delayed by the need for additional testing.

The California man thought he put his past behind him, but then he became victim to an online scam associated more with the mafia than the Internet. He is alleging in a federal lawsuit that three websites are running an extortion racket preying on his history as a one-time registered sex offender. The alleged shakedown is a growing trend in cyberspace that also includes "ransomware" -- another extortion scheme that uses fake police and FBI warnings to demand money in exchange for unfreezing data on your computer, experts say.
