A man who committed suicide on Interstate 95 on March 11 told police during the standoff leading up to his death that he killed Lawrence Lewis of Molunkus Township because the convicted sex offender was molesting children, court documents show. Bruce Neal, aka Bruce King, told Penobscot County Sheriff's Deputy Patty McLaughlin shortly before he shot himself with a .30-30 rifle that he forced Lewis to swallow two bottles of nitroglycerin and one bottle of "psych meds," according to a search warrant affidavit released Wednesday at Lincoln District Court. "King told Deputy McLaughlin that he killed Lawrence Lewis. King said he had reported Lewis for molesting children and no one was doing anything," the affidavit states.

That's what Craig Strizzi, a veteran correction officer at the Albany County jail, allegedly told two inmates Wednesday afternoon just before he enlisted them to join him in beating another inmate in the jail's recreation yard. Statements from Strizzi (PDF), the victim and the two inmates charged Monday in the beating shed light on the alleged plot, the lengths Strizzi is accused of going to in an effort to cover up the attack and how it unfolded. "We both talked about how we hated child molesters," Matthew Cahn, one of the inmates charged in the beating, said in his statement to investigators. Strizzi, Cahn and Lauterio Santos are accused of attacking [name withheld], a 20-year-old Albany man held at the jail on charges he raped an 8-year-old boy in Albany's Lincoln Park. "I told Strizzi I would like to get a shot at getting [name withheld] if I could do it without getting into trouble."

A 41-year-old city man is dead and police are following "strong leads" in the investigation, police say. Officers responded to the 900 block of Buren Street in Hopewell for a reported shooting. There, they located Richard Miles Hawthorne, 41, with a gunshot wound to the chest. Hawthorne was declared dead at the scene, according to a statement issued this morning. Hawthorne is a registered sex offender listed in the Virginia State Police registry. He was convicted of attempted rape and abduction for immoral purposes in 1995 in Prince George County, according to records. He had renewed his registration on March 19. Police report they have strong leads in the case and do not believe it was a random act of violence.
